First released by Robert Thorne’s Fann Street Foundry around 1810. Revived in 1938 by Stephenson Blake, who acquired the Fann Street holdings [Gray 1976]. The solid typeface that was the basis for Thorne Shaded is now known as Thorowgood.
Adopted by Photo-Lettering for phototypesetting [PLINC 1965] and by Mecanorma for dry-transfer lettering [Mecanorma 1970].
Digitizations include OPTI Thorne Shaded (Castcraft, 1990–1993, used for sample) and Thorne Shaded (Dieter Steffmann, 2002). The latter is a freebie with a limited character set (A–Z, 0–9, &).
