Part of Stephenson Blake’s Grotesque series. Originated in-house in 1907 [Millington 2002]. Designed by Eleisha Pechey in 1906. An italic followed in 1949 [Reichardt 2011].
Headliners had a phototype adaptation named Number-Nine, in five weights plus one Outline variant, all shown in four widths. [1962 specimen] Filmotype carried a version, too, as GQ51, with the italic as GQ54. [Filmomaster c.1974] They also originated outline variants which were copied by VGC as L-28 and L-29 [VGC 1972].
