A revision of Latinskaya (Berthold, St.Petersburg, 1901), which is a Cyrillic version of Lateinisch (Berthold, Berlin, 1899). Designed at Poligraphmash [ParaType/MyFonts] a.k.a. the NII OGIZ type design bureau [ParaType] around 1940. Other sources date Literaturnaya to 1937 and credit it to “Schchukin, T. Breyev and G. Bannikova”. [Devroye] Literaturnaya became the favorite text typeface of Soviet typography. [ParaType]
A digital version was developed at ParaGraph in 1996 by Lyubov Kuznetsova, spanning two weights in roman and italic (used for sample). [ParaType] See also Quant Antiqua. In 2017, Marath Salychow made another digitization named Literaturnaya Book (roman only).
