Studio MPLS brings Roastar’s coffee tins to life with Coquette by Mark Simonson, adding a nostalgic yet vibrant touch to the packaging. Coquette’s unconnected, upright script delivers a playful, retro flair that pairs seamlessly with the bright color blocking and bold geometric patterns. Arrevederci JNL and Main Feature JNL, two quirky sans serifs by Jeff Levine, add to the retro vernacular feel of the design. The result is a packaging design that feels like a fresh take on classic pantry staples—timeless with just the right amount of charm.

Founded in 1970, Tracks magazine is an “iconic Australian surf publication that speaks to all surfers.” In 2020 the magazine officially celebrated 50 years in print – “a major milestone for any brand”, according to their current magazine editor Luke Kennedy.

For issues 574–578 (2020), the magazine logo was set in lowercase Coquette Black. The typography on the cover and inside the magazine uses Arvo, paired with a changing selection of typefaces,

Birra Stout is one of the many typefaces used for the typographic illustrations that accompany Amanda Kae Fronk’s article about linguist Mark E. Davies in an issue of BYU Magazine, a quarterly published by Brigham Young University. The whimsical display typeface by Darden Studio was chosen for the words “famous” and “crisis” in the large opening spread. Birra also appears in another graphic with “words about women”. Here it’s used to render the terms “pregnant” and “adult”.

What could you do with a few hundred billion words? A BYU professor is transforming linguistics research, language learning, legal studies, and other fields all over the world.

Among the other repeatedly or prominently used fonts in this smorgasbord are Klavika/Klavika Display (“Big Lang BYU”, “inalienable”, “huge”), Bourton Hand Script (“Flow”, “friendly”), Facebuster (“obesity”), Tungsten (“recession”), Quitador (“Ideal”), Burford Dots (“refugee”), Estilo Script (“creative”), and Archer (“civility”). “Using Davies’s Corpus of Historical American English to compare some of the most common adjectives that appear near the word women in two different time periods – 1810–99 and 1970–2009 – reveals major shifts in attitudes about women and their role in society.” Klavika and Bourton Hand Script are used for the title, Pompadour Numerals, Cooper Black, and an unidentified grotesque for the years [edit: Champion Gothic, see comments].

Geldmattie (“money pal”) is a project where young people with financial problems are helped by slightly older young people who do not have these problems. Together, they try to solve income- and debt-related problems by meeting up every week.

Witty use of Coquette Regular for a store selling gourmet popcorn in the Indianapolis International Airport. The double capital P’s suddenly look a bit like popcorn.

I really liked the lowercase ‘o’ and thought it matched the idea of small groups.  I took the little dot and mirrored it to make it look like two people praying for each other and it just made sense!
