Mergenthaler Linotype’s version of the Old Style
typeface originally cut by Alexander Phemister for Miller & Richard
and
first shown in a specimen in 1860. “The adapted Intertype
versions of [Phemister’s] design was called Bookface,
and the Linotype (London) version is Bookprint. The
Mergenthaler Linotype versions are Old Style No. 1 and
No. 3. [The accompanying samples show No.
1 and No. 2 [sic!], both in regular (with small
caps) and italic styles. The latter is slightly heavier and
exhibits several differences in some details, most notably in ‘Q’,
‘f’, ‘g’] […]
By a change of seven capitals and small capitals, Old
Style No. 1 may be converted to Ronaldson (the
