First shown as Rustic No. 2, issued in 1845/6 by
Figgins [Gray]
and as Ornamented No. 3 by Bruce. Available from many
19th-century foundries (Besley, Boston, Fann St., Ullmer) as
Rustic. The design differed in different sizes, and
eventually included
regular, shaded, and outline shaded versions.
It was recut in 1962 or earlier by John S. Carroll as
“Rustic or Log Cabin […] from Bruce’s
Ornamented No. 864.” [McGrew 1993]
Digital adaptations include:
- Rustic (Solotype, 1999, no
shadow; used for the sample here) is perhaps the most complete
digitization – and the most clear, as it’s based on one of the
smaller metal sizes. Included on the 24
Special-Effects Display Fonts CD-ROM.
- Pinewood,
a freebie digital interpretation without shadow. Richard William Mueller made version 1 by 1993
with basic character support. Dieter Steffmann made version 2 by 2003 with
additional support for accented characters and more punctuation. An
alternate version was distributed as Woodbadge
(anonymous, 1996).
