Plantin

The design of Monotype Plantin was overseen by Frank Hinman Pierpont. “Plantin followed Mason’s Imprint as one of the first types to be specifically designed for mechanical composition. Pierpont and Fritz Steltzer, head of the drawing office, worked from a face in the 1905 Plantin-Moretus specimen (although this face was never used by the great Antwerp printer of that name).” [Macmillan] The model was a Gros Cicero face cut in the 16th century by Robert Granjon. First issued in 1913 as Series 110 in roman and italic styles, followed by Light 113 (roman and italic, 1914), Bold 194 (roman and italic, 1925), Bold Condensed 236 (1927), Bold 287 (1930), and Titling 438 (1936). Later extended with Semi-Bold (roman and italic, 1969) and Condensed 289 (roman and italic, 1970). The original Series 110 was adopted by lntertype, Ludlow, and Stephenson Blake [Reichardt 2011].

Brigitte Schuster made an academic revival at KABK’s Type Media program in 2010. So did Étienne Aubert Bonn in 2013: his Compass is based on early drawings for Monotype Plantin series 110.
