Cassandre for Deberny
& Peignot. Two weights were released in 1937. A third weight
(gras) was added in 1938. The family was completed by a condensed
all-caps style, lnitiales Peignot étroit, or
Peignot Initials. The typeface was used for
the signs at the
Expo Paris 1937 [Reichardt 2011] [Corpus
typographique français].
Phototype versions by Photo-Lettering as Chickering (Medium w/
Backslant, Bold) [PLINC 1950] and later as
Peignot (3 weights plus
Bold Open) [PLINC 1971], and by VGC (3 weights) [VGC 1972]. Dry-transfer type adaptations by
Letraset [Letraset 1976] and Mecanorma [1981 catalog]. Compugraphic’s single-style
clone was named Penyoe [Compugraphic 1976].
Legacy digitizations by Compugraphic as Penyoe,
Bitstream as Exotic 350 (1990–1993), and URW++ (1994,
w/ two extra styles, Round Medium and a reversed
Initials Bold. The light style was also sold as
Display No3 URW D Light). Linotype’s version was made
at Adobe and is available from Monotype as of 2023.

In 2023, Production Type acquired the exclusive rights from the estate of A.M. Cassandre [announcement]. Their authorized digitization of Peignot was made available through the Beta program in 2024, as part of the House of Cassandre collection. It’s the only one to also include the Peignot Initials.
