Designed by Arno Drescher for Ludwig Wagner in 1938–39 and later cast by Typoart [Wetzig 1926–40] [Reichardt 2011]. The release date is disputed: Typoart’s Musterkartei DIN 16507 indicates 1931, but Fundamental does not appear in Klimschs Jahrbuch before 1939. Announced in 1938 as Atlantik. This name might have been reconsidered because of Woellmer’s Atlantis-Grotesk (1931).
All styles have alternate forms for ‘M’ (splayed) and ‘S’ (narrow).
No quality digital version available, but similar characteristics are found in the many revivals of Drescher’s Super-Grotesk. Peter Wiegel’s Fundamental Brigade is a freebie digitization in 5 styles.
