Based on
hand-lettered advertising drawn by Frederic Goudy in 1903 for
the Pabst Brewing Company. Made into a full typeface on request of
the advertising manager of Schlesinger & Mayer, a Chicago
department store. Produced at ATF member Marder, Luse & Co. and
first made available to the public in 1904 [Printing
Art, Jan 1904;
Inland Printer, Aug 1927]. An Italic was added within
the next year or so. Matrices for both designs were cut by Robert
Wiebking. [McGrew, Reichardt] Also available from Lanston Monotype
(1912), with caps that are a little narrower than the foundry
original. Pabst Old Style Condensed is a modification
by Linotype. [McGrew] Schriftguss had both styles as
Ohio-Schrift and Ohio-Kursiv and added a
third bold one, see Ohio-Kraft.
