Initiated as Cabourg in 1942 by Marcel Olive (who perhaps directed an unknown designer), completed by Roger Excoffon, and released by Fonderie Olive as Chambord in five styles (1946–50) [Chamaret/Gineste/Morlighem 2010]. Strongly inspired by Cassandre’s Peignot (Deberny & Peignot, 1937), but with a more conventional lowercase. Chambord even was the subject of an – unsuccessful – lawsuit for plagiarism, which “may to some extent explain Peignot’s initiative to create ATypI to protect typefaces.” [Devroye] Deberny & Peignot reacted on the instant success of Chambord with the release of Touraine (1947).
