Designed by John F. Cumming, initially as a caps-only design named Typothetæ, shown by Dickinson in 1889. [Inland Printer] When a lowercase was added by 1890, the extended version was named Skjald. [Inland Printer] [ATF 1895–96]. Both products were continued by ATF, with the caps-only version also spelled Typothetae.
Adopted for phototype as Xenotype 3455 (PLINC, 1962). [Art Nouveau Xenotypes 1895–1905] Fürst shows a phototype version as Classique. [1969 catalog]. Endora (Lettergraphics) is a tamer reinterpretation.
Monotype has a digital version inherited from Agfa Typography. It contains several alternates (‘AHLRSWagimqs’) and ligatures (‘HE’, ‘OO’, ‘oo’) under unrelated codepoints.
