Designed about 1895 by T.W. Smith at the Caslon foundry in England. Copied by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler about 1903 with permission [The Type-founder], and extended with larger sizes and six additional styles designed by Sidney Gaunt in 1907–09. Also known as Caslon Old Roman. Copied by Monotype and also Linotype (1913). Flinsch (and later Bauer) had it as Universum [McGrew 1993] [Reichardt 2011] [Wetzig 1926–40]
Patrick M. Murphy did a digital interpretation (Mad Irishman Productions, 2002, used for sample).
