Haas Clarendon is Hermann Eidenbenz’s 1953
adaptation of the 19th-century slab serif distinguished by
bracketed serifs. It’s the Clarendon we know best
today. Issued by Haas in kräftig (Semi-Bold) and fett (Bold)
weights in 1953. Extended by Stempel with mager (Regular, 1962,
halbfett (Medium, 1962), breitfett
(Bold Expanded, 1964), and schmalmager (Condensed, 1966) styles
[Reichardt 2011]. At least the Regular and
Semi-Bold were adapted for the Linotype [c. 1963 Stempel specimen]
Digital versions include Bitstream’s Clarendon BT
(1990–1993, five weights + two condensed weights, a.k.a.
Clarendon 701, also by Tilde), Linotype’s
Clarendon (three weights, also by Adobe) and
Clarendon LT (before 2006, four weights plus Bold
