Nāru (ナール), or NAR, is a Japanese
rounded typeface by Shaken. It was submitted by Yukihiro Nakamura to the 1st Ishii Award
Creative Typeface Contest held in 1970 in which in placed 1st. It
was further developed with supervision from Kazuo Hashimoto and
released in 1972. The name is a portmanteau of “Nakamura” and
“Round”.
The first weight to be released was Nāru which
resembles a fine weight. Nāru D was released a year later.
In 1975, two more weights and one outline variant were added as
Nāru L, M, and O. In 1977, Nāru E was
released. Shadow variants were released in 1985 as Nāru OS
and SH. Nāru DB followed in 1987 and Nāru
H and U in 1995.
In 1994, Shaken also released a different set of kana design for
Nāru L, M, D, DB, and E to be used for children’s
reading.
