Gothic Condensed is a type series that seems to
have been expanded over time with notable inconsistency between
some sizes, and sometimes even within single sizes – perhaps the
result of designs from disparate sources being tacked together
under a common name for marketing purposes.
The series originated no later than 1876 at MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan [MacMillan,
Watts, et al.] where it was marketed under the generic
Gothic Condensed name. For a relatively short time
after MS&J merged with ATF, the series was offered as
Gothic Condensed No. 47 before ultimately being
replaced by more cohesive families like Franklin Gothic.
