The outstanding Sali e Tabacchi Journal is a publication that explores the relationship between the creative arts and Italy’s unknown rituals, habits and traditions. Founded by Elisa Carassai and Leonardo Pellegrino, the magazine is designed by Aisslinger Pellegrino and has published its fifth issue, Riv.05, “La Via del Fuoco”. The Milanese magazine, written in English and Italian, investigates fire as a primordial element – from molten lava and volcanoes, to eros, love and its twin flames, to spirits, will-o’-the-wisps, perpetual flames, and sacred fires – tracing how this perpetual force has shaped humanity’s existential condition since its origins. The volume brings together essays, images, and literary fragments.

The magazine is set in OT Magister by Omnitype, a faithful revival of Aldo Novarese’s Magister, for its title, and paired with AL Linea Book for the text, a precise revival of Umberto Fenocchio’s FTC Linea by Alex Lescieux. These two modern Italian typefaces, reawakened from slumber, resonate with the dual nature of fire, enduring and regenerative.

The release of Riv.05 was celebrated on October 23, 2024, at Fonderia Battaglia in Milan, with a launch event held in collaboration with Carhartt WIP.

Quattro Milano is an interdisciplinary project space in Milan, shaped by its name “Quattro” anchored in the idea of brevity and intensity, where exhibitions unfolding across four days.

The inaugural exhibition, Exploring Perspectives, opened on April 18, 2024, with the modular Seats System by Swedish Girls and the abstract photography series I Wish I Did by Riccardo Raspa. This marked the beginning of Quattro’s commitment to short-form exhibitions that bring international and local voices into dialogue.

The visual identity of Quattro Milano was developed by Aisslinger Pellegrino, composed in AL Linea Book, a revival by Alex Lescieux of Umberto Fenocchio’s FTC Linea from the late 1960s. A typeface at once universal and Italian, mirroring the spirit of Quattro itself: open to the world, yet grounded in the Milanese scene and the voices it welcomes.

Sotto le Pietre, il Sale is the first publication by studio x01, founded by Giorgio Viscardi and Gabriele Rossi. Based in Milan, their studio focuses primarily on producing videos for commercial clients. This marks the beginning of their first adventure as independent art publishers, highlighting the photographic work of Giovanni Galanello on the island of San Pietro, Italy. This photographic series, limited to 100 copies, depicts the sea, rocks, seaweed, boats, nets, hands, salt, cold scales, and buildings with barely lit rooms, capturing the daily life of the fishermen on the island in the Sulcis archipelago. On the back cover, it reads (translated from the Italian):

They return when the Moon is already high. They drag the sleeping bodies into the dimly lit room. With their fingers, they rummage through the entrails. They spread the pale sacks filled with eggs on the bed of white crystals, covering the heart like in a limestone mound, a large, still warm ruby. Salt to salt. Purple streaks stain the white bed. Under the stones, in the salt, hung on threads to dry, they prepare the organs for divination.

It was designed by the studio Aisslinger Pellegrino, with a composition in AL Linea Nera for the text and AL Sigla Medium for the titles. Both are revivals of typefaces designed by Umberto Fenocchio for the Fonderia Tipografica Cooperativa in the 1960s.

The visuals are the result of a close collaboration between the ECAL graphic designer and the photographer, producing four impossible objects merging photography and CGI. The sans used on posters, leaflets and signage is the earliest version of AL Linea, a revival started by Alex Lescieux in 2020 at ECAL. It stays very close to the original FTC Linea by Umberto Fenocchio launched in the sixties. AL Linea is available on request, and the complete original collection (including condensed version) is currently under development.

The typophoto posters, postcards and the booklet presenting the results of the workshop were set by Giacomo Bastianelli in AL Linea Medium and Bold, a revival started by Alex Lescieux in 2020 at the ECAL Master Type Design. AL Linea is a lengthy restoration project that aims to be as close as possible to the original FTC Linea by Umberto Fenocchio launched in the sixties, using very precise scans of all the characters shown in the original specimens. AL Linea is available on request, and the complete original collection (including condensed version) is currently under development.

CURA. celebrates its 40th issue with CURA. Manifesto, a special collector’s edition featuring a collection of over one hundred contributions expressly created by artists, writers, thinkers, and philosophers who have collaborated over the years with CURA.’s editorial and curatorial platform, since its founding in 2009.

Through a multifaceted anthology of visual and textual statements, CURA. Manifesto thus intends to highlight the most compelling themes of the contemporary art debate, in a broad and varied overview of contributions which have shaped the profile and identity of the magazine to date. Thanks to the contribution of an Editorial Board including Adriana Blidaru, Michael Connor, Martha Kirszenbaum, and Anthony Huberman, CURA. Manifesto thus celebrates an important milestone in the history of the magazine.

The issue, designed by Dan Solbach and featuring an iconic graphic cover, translates the point of arrival and the transition to a subsequent phase in the life of the magazine, with a restyling taking place in autumn 2023. The fonts used are Cosmos, a free-style hand-drawn typeface made as a calligraphic interpretation of the piece Cosmos, for 4 pianos in quarter tones, Op. 28 by Russian-French experimental music composer Ivan Wyschnegradsky (1893–1979). It was designed by Minjong Kim at ECAL in 2021. The sans is AL Linea, a revival started by Alex Lescieux in 2020 at ECAL. It stays very close to the original FTC Linea by Umberto Fenocchio launched in the sixties. Both typefaces are available on request.
