Originated as Round Shade(d) No. 1 (solid w/ open shade) and No. 2 (solid w/ open shade) at Boston Type Foundry around 1852. [Reichardt 2011] The sample combines both styles.

Photo-Lettering had an all-caps phototype adaptation of No. 1 under the name Arctic. [PLINC 1965]
