Book design project developed for Soraia Gomes Teixeira’s doctoral thesis in Contemporary Aesthetics, presented at the Centro Universitario de Diseño y Arte de Barcelona (EINA). From design studio Common Forms (translated from the Portuguese):

The project started from a set of formal academic constraints that were assumed as formal and conceptual restrictions. The requirement of a standard A4 format determined the scale of the object and its proportion from the beginning, influencing decisions regarding composition, rhythm, and organization of the graphic layout.

The publication includes a significant number of images intended to document the research process, which required the definition of multiple compositional solutions capable of accommodating different scales and relationships between text and image. In parallel, the textual hierarchy proved particularly demanding, with various types of entries and reading levels that implied an unconventional organization and a clear system of typographical differentiation.

Later, regarding the choice of materials, there was greater freedom. Nevertheless, a solid and contained volume was chosen, using white paper for both the text block and the cover, differentiated only by the finish. This choice reinforces the unity of the object, while simultaneously introducing a subtle distinction in terms of materials.

The binding process was simplified, using only the folding of the signatures and the binding of the pages with an elastic band. This solution, in addition to addressing the limitations of graphic production, suggests a slower and more deliberate way of browsing, emphasizing the act of browsing through the book.

EXKi, a Belgian healthy food brand celebrating 25 years, recently revealed their global rebrand, led by Agathe Millet and Imagina.

At the heart of this new visual identity is a custom-drawn logo, which is bold, impactful, and clear, characterized by its rounded shapes. The brand’s iconic carrot has also been reworked; now geometric and rounded, it has become a symbol in its own right.

The updated color palette has been reduced to three strong, contrasting colors, while Diolce, the main font, balances and softens the design, with Uncut Sans and Anybody used for additional information and communication. This comprehensive new visual identity extends across packagings, print and digital communication, the signage system, interior design, and a complete brandbook.

Le colosse qui a obscurci le ciel (“The Colossus That Darkened the Sky”) is an encyclopaedia about volcanoes that examines how mass media portrays disaster and horror. Created by Elina Kerivel for her Bachelor 2 project at ENSAV La Cambre in 2023, the book uses photography to compare documentary images of volcanic events with how they're shown in the media.

Volcanoes are both fascinating and destructive, but Le colosse qui a obscurci le ciel questions why we’re so drawn to their darker side. Through a collection of images and texts, Kerivel explores the gap between scientific documentation and the sensationalised coverage we typically see in news media.

The typefaces she used are Uncut Sans and (the Latin part of) GenA Koburi Mincho.

I caught you is an editorial work inspired by Steven Spielberg's film Catch Me If You Can, which recounts the life of the famous fraudster Frank Jr. Abagnale.

Putting myself in the shoes of an investigator and a forger, I catalogued the various documents forged by F. Abagnale that appear in the film. I then recreated them as facsimiles and incorporated them into the edition.

These documents interact with scenes from the film in which they appear, the text of Frank Abagnale’s autobiography (which inspired the film), as well as excerpts and images from the book The Art of the Steal, in which the forger shares his knowledge of forgery and explains how to protect oneself from fraud.

This monograph on Italian artist Eduarda Emilia Maino, better known as Dadamaino, features typography in Uncut Sans. It was designed by Thanh Polverel as a student project at École Estienne in Paris.

The publication explores Maino's artistic practice and creative development through a thoughtful visual presentation.

Ahead of the 2024 National Council Elections in Austria, Grazer Frauenrat created a brochure titled Frauen*politik im Parteiencheck. The brochure compares the stances of political parties on women’s rights and gender equality, covering key issues such as child care, elderly support, and measures to combat violence against women. Its aim is to equip voters with the information they need to make an informed choice, with a particular focus on regional governance.

The wayfinding for the fourteenth edition of the Florence Biennale was designed by Edoardo Matteoni. The compelling motto ‘I AM YOU. Individual and Collective Identities in Contemporary Art and Design’ invited artists and audiences to reflect on the complex interplay between personal identity and collective consciousness in our modern world.

The wayfinding is set in Uncut Sans by Kasper Nordkvist. The lettering of the biennial theme uses a different and yet unidentified typeface selection. See also a previously published post showing the catalogue.

UNCUT.wtf is a curated online repository of free and open-source typefaces by independent designers. Founded on principle of respect for creators, it welcomes submissions from anyone looking to contribute their fonts. It is a comprehensive resource for designers seeking contemporary webfonts and variable fonts for their future projects.

The website is an initiative by Kasper Nordkvist, a Danish digital designer and front-end developer. It is designed using a typeface of his own creation, Uncut Sans, consistently applied across all pages. The unicase logo with ink traps appears to be custom drawn.

As of early 2024, UNCUT.wtf offers 151 curated typefaces, neatly organized into Sans Serif, Serif, Monospace and Display sections. Users can explore these categories through a user-friendly interface, presented in grid or list view. The Unbot chatbot adds a fun touch, providing automated answers to inform visitors. The site also adeptly caters to mobile users with a well-thought mobile version.

UNCUT.wtf stands out with clear typography, a lightweight interface, and effective size contrasts against a gray background. This design enhances information visibility, ensuring a smooth navigation experience. The hover effects on buttons add visual interest, and download pages feature animated red hearts on credits, contributing a delightful and inviting touch.

Launched in April 2021, UNCUT.wtf underwent a redesign in November of the same year, resulting in its current appearance and enhanced functionality. The primary font in use transitioned to Uncut Sans in late 2021, replacing the previous use of Apfel Grotezk during a brief period.

Periodic updates have consistently improved the website's functionality, introducing new content and ensuring a more enjoyable user experience. Instant downloads are available for some fonts, while others redirect users to trusted offsite sources. Importantly, the website refrains from including ads, respecting the hard work of type designers who generously share their creations with the public.

Uncut Sans is consistently used for headings and buttons (UI) throughout the website.

Rebranding and fresh webdesign for the Grazer Frauenrat. The Grazer Frauenrat is an independent association for networking and supporting the feminist scene in Graz. Originally founded in 1986 by Grete Schurz, the Graz Women's Council today consists of representatives from various feminist groups, associations, institutions, and activists.

Catalogue for the Pavillon Belge à la 18e biennale d'Architecture de Venise, that is the Belgian Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, designed by Studio Le Roy Cleeremans (Esther Le Roy and Sarah Cleeremans):

An inspiring fictional account that takes the form of an investigation conducted in the 2050s, Demeurer en mycélium / Living in Mycelium calls into question our voracious, extractivist production system by giving us an opportunity to see, feel and experience an alternative constructive world made from and with living materials, namely fungi.

The publication was edited by Vinciane Despret, Christine Aventin, Juliette Salme and Bento, and published by Cellule architecture.

The main typeface is Better Times, which anchors its skeleton in URW’s Nimbus Roman no. 9, a variant of the canonical Times. It was started by Adèle Gallé in collaboration with and for Studio Le Roy Cleeremans and triggered by this particular project. As of December 2023, it is work in progress and not available yet.

Better Times is paired with Uncut Sans by Kasper Nordkvist. The symbols seen on the book spine and also on some of the interior pages are derived from Clémence Fontaine’s Isobare.

Catalogue for the XIV Florence Biennale, an art exhibition held in October 2023 under the motto “I AM YOU. Individual and Collective Identities in Contemporary Art and Design”. Since 1997, it has been held every two years in the exhibition spaces of the Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy.

The brochure Notre projet pour un logement renouvelé (“Our project for a renewed housing”) for Margot-Duclot — Architectes Associés and Tekhné Ingénierie was designed by Hudson Catty. Printed with two inks (green and silver) and set in Uncut Sans, the booklet was published to promote their innovative take on low carbon architecture.

Bolimów Landscape Park retains its appeal as one of Poland’s most scenic places for a quick weekend getaway, a mere hour’s drive from the big smoke of Warsaw. Tapping into the calming ethos of rural life, Bolimówek is a cozy getaway cabin to soak up the great outdoors over a quick weekend staycation and long-term WFH rentals alike. For this commission, we’ve created branding and copywriting for the property’s website to translate its wholesome charm into the online sphere.

The house has a cozy vibe throughout: all-wood interiors and warm-tone fabrics compliment the sight of woodland critters frolicking just outside the windows. Translating the property’s distinctly offline qualities into the online sphere, we’ve decided on an organic, woodsy shade of brown as the dominant colour in the website, animated logo and all graphic design, making a bold – if quiet – statement.

Nodding towards the lush vegetation enveloping the house, the custom icons draw from the region’s wildflowers such as poppies and cornflowers, all the while referencing Poland’s folk cutout art in their form.

The identity including the bilingual website (Polish and English) uses Eklektyk for the logo and larger type, with Uncut Sans for text.

Women Tell Women is a project dedicated to female professionals aiming to build a healthy relationship with their work. Inspired by multiple doubts and insecurities related to work life, the website gathers questions answered by different women from all over the world. Featuring bold colors, the design is complemented with a serif, Editorial New, and sans-serif, Uncut Sans, that create a balance and make the texts easy to read.
