<p><cite>The Negro Mood</cite> is a book by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lerone_Bennett_Jr.">Lerone Bennett Jr.</a> (1928–2018), African-American scholar, author, social historian, and long-time executive editor of <em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebony_(magazine)">Ebony</a></em> magazine. First published <a href="https://archive.org/details/negromoodotheres0000benn/page/n5/mode/2up">in 1964 by Johnson</a>, this is the cover of Ballantine’s paperback edition from 1965 (U5045).</p>

<p>The interlocking letters used for the title on (S)X<span class="nbsp">&nbsp;</span>1011 and NXS<span class="nbsp">&nbsp;</span>1011 are hand-lettered, and don’t use a typeface – note that none of the repeating letters is identical. In both versions, <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/115261/filmotype-falcon"><strong>Filmotype Falcon</strong></a> is used for the group’s name. The Diplomat logo uses <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/19177/filmotype-zephyr" data-entity-code-id="19177" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Filmotype Zephyr</a></strong>. The song titles are set in all caps from what appears to be <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/303/news-gothic" data-entity-code-id="303" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">News Gothic</a></strong> (white on red) and <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/74745/futura-condensed" data-entity-code-id="74745" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Futura Condensed</a></strong> (green on white).</p>

<p>In 1971, Diplomat released a different album under the same title (SX<span class="nbsp"> 1708), with a similar lettering style for the title. This time, the letters are not custom drawn, but come from a typeface: It’s <strong><a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/115266/filmotype-newton" data-entity-code-id="115266" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Filmotype Newton</a></strong>, see the end of this post.</span></p><br/><a href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/uses/30121/the-caroleers-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-"><img src="https://assets.fontsinuse.com/static/use-media-items/103/102278/upto-700xauto/69b54cff/s-l1600%20%281%29.jpeg"/></a><br/><br/><i><b>Source:&nbsp;<span class="fiu-attribution__sourceUrl"><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/Percy-Faith-Shangri-La-1963-SEALED-Vinyl-LP-/111730112616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.ebay.com</a></span>&nbsp;</b><span>License: <span class="fiu-attribution__license">All Rights Reserved</span><span>. </span></span></i><br/><br/><p>Diplomat Records, <a href="http://www.discogs.com/The-Caroleers-Rudolph-The-Red-Nose-Reindeer/release/6180515">NXS<span class="nbsp"> </span>1011</a> (Stereo, 1959)</p><br/><a href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/uses/30121/the-caroleers-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-"><img src="https://assets.fontsinuse.com/static/use-media-items/103/102332/upto-700xauto/69b54cff/The-Caroleers.jpeg"/></a><br/><br/><i><b>Source:&nbsp;<span class="fiu-attribution__sourceUrl"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/robever80/8481991849/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.flickr.com</a></span>&nbsp;</b><span>License: <span class="fiu-attribution__license">All Rights Reserved</span><span>. </span></span></i><br/><br/><p>Detail with the band name in all-caps <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/115261/filmotype-falcon" data-entity-code-id="115261" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Filmotype Falcon</a></p><br/><a href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/uses/30121/the-caroleers-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-"><img src="https://assets.fontsinuse.com/static/use-media-items/103/102335/upto-700xauto/69b54cff/Diplomat-Records.jpeg"/></a><br/><br/><i><b>Source:&nbsp;<span class="fiu-attribution__sourceUrl"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/robever80/8481991849/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.flickr.com</a></span>&nbsp;</b><span>License: <span class="fiu-attribution__license">All Rights Reserved</span><span>. </span></span></i><br/><br/><p>Detail with the Diplomat logo in <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/typefaces/19177/filmotype-zephyr" data-entity-code-id="19177" data-entity-code-type="TypeEntity">Filmotype Zephyr</a></p><br/><a href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/uses/30121/the-caroleers-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-"><img src="https://assets.fontsinuse.com/static/use-media-items/103/102279/upto-700xauto/69b54cff/s-l1600.jpeg"/></a><br/><br/><i><b>Source:&nbsp;<span class="fiu-attribution__sourceUrl"><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/Percy-Faith-Shangri-La-1963-SEALED-Vinyl-LP-/111730112616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.ebay.com</a></span>&nbsp;</b><span>License: <span class="fiu-attribution__license">All Rights Reserved</span><span>. </span></span></i><br/><br/><p>Back cover <a href="http://www.discogs.com/The-Caroleers-Rudolph-The-Red-Nose-Reindeer/release/6180515">NXS<span class="nbsp"> </span>1011</a> (1959). It features “Zorba’s Dance” from the motion picture <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorba_the_Greek_(film)"><cite>Zorba the Greek</cite></a> (1964), starring Anthony Quinn.</p>

<p>The big type is Paul Renner’s <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/4070/futura-display"><strong>Futura Display</strong></a> (1932), which was named Futura Schlagzeile (“Headline”) in Germany. In the US, it also circulated as Airport Tourist. This copy made by Baltimore was cast from electrotyped mats derived from the German foundry type. [<a href="http://www.oakknoll.com/pages/books/34980/mac-mcgrew/american-metal-typefaces-of-the-twentieth-century">McGrew</a>] The script typeface is <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/19174/filmotype-yukon"><strong>Filmotype Zephyr</strong></a>, originally made in 1952 and digitized in 2012 by <a target="_self" class="entity-link" href="https://www.fontsinuse.com/type_designers/130/alejandro-paul" data-entity-code-id="130" data-entity-code-type="TypeDesigner">Alejandro Paul</a> together with the related <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/19174/filmotype-yukon">Yukon</a> (1958).</p>

<p>The small sans serif appears to be <a href="http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/97517/news-gothic-extended"><strong>News Gothic Extended</strong></a>. This wide variant was made in two weights by Intertype in 1961 and seems to be unavailable in digital form.
