An extended version of Athenian. “Originated by American Type
Founders’ Co., New York [i.e. Conner]” [ATF
Collective Specimen Book, 1895/96].
Carried by Schelter & Giesecke as
Mediäval-Athenienne, credited to “Conners [sic] 1892”
[Wetzig 1926–40]. Comes with an alternate
form for ‘a’. The same design or a similar one appears as
Athéniennes in a 1889 Turlot specimen [Turlot].
Also issued by British Type Foundry in 1896 [Gray 1976].
Revived by Matteo Bologna and Jesse Ragan, inspired by the
typeface used on the cover of the Type Directors Club’s
1958 annual. This revival was produced for use in the TDC’s
Typography
32 in 2011. Differences in comparison to the original
include a splayed ‘M’ and an ‘R’ with curved leg. Used for
sample.
