The first of the typefaces in Griffith’s “Legibility Group” for Linotype, including Corona, Excelsior/Opticon/Paragon, Ionic No. 5, and Textype. Lanston’s 6 point Monotype Ionic 156-J was used as a starting point.

Revived by Bitstream as News 701 (used for sample). Monotype’s Ionic No 5 (2021) expands the design to 5 weights.
