Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1843. Trained at the local
Trowitzsch & Sohn foundry. After stints in Dresden, Prague (at G.
Haase & Sons), Frankfurt (at Flinsch), Paris (at Battenberg, later Mayeur) and Basle (at Haas), he was engaged by L. Johnson & Co,
Philadelphia, in 1866 [Inland
Printer]. Died July 31, 1905, in Philadelphia
[Reichardt/Hoefer].
Designer of more than 80 typefaces for MacKellar,
Smiths & Jordan where he patented many of his designs. Some
sources spell his first name as “Hermann” but his
signature and patent documents spell it with one ‘n’. Sometimes
spelled Ihlenberg (Berlin’s
address directory for 1843 has a single entry, for C.F.
Ihlenburg, cobbler).
