Brain Damage is a 1988 American comedy horror film written and directed by Frank Henenlotter. It stars Rick Hearst in his debut acting role as Brian, a young man who becomes acquainted with a talking parasite known as Aylmer (voiced by John Zacherle) that injects him with an addictive fluid that causes euphoric hallucinations; in return, Aylmer demands that Brian allow him to feed on the brains of other humans.

The movie logo in red animated caps with irregular counters is based on a typeface that was almost thirty years old at that point: it’s the boldest weight of Safari, released around 1960 by Headliners. In 1963, the Medium weight was used on the cover of Where the Wild Things Are.

Marble Hornets is a found footage web series created by Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage, based on the original Slender Man mythos. The YouTube series ran for three seasons between June 20th, 2009, and June 20th, 2014. The main story follows Jay Merrick as he attempts to uncover what happened to his friend, Alex Kralie, following the sudden cancellation of his unfinished student film named Marble Hornets as something starts invading his life.

Every episode (or entry as is called by the series) starts with a title card and is accompanied with snippets of text throughout the video written by one of the main characters to express their thoughts, current predicament, actions they'll take or describe contents on tapes they've found. All of this text is set in Verdana Bold, which continues to be used in the 2025 spin-off series, Rosswood.

Outside of the episodes, Marble Hornet’s branding exclusively uses Camcorder, a fitting typeface for a series revolving around cameras. It is used in promotional material, comics, merchandise and physical releases. It is also used in most of the videos by totheark, a separate YouTube channel existing within the Marble Hornets universe that uploads cryptic and genuinely unnerving videos pertaining to events and characters of the main story.

This upteenth remake of The Body Snatchers directed by Abel Ferrara, produced in 1993 and released in 1994 features a very 90s looking design with elongated and skinny letters and wide spacing.

The title typeface is the then brand new Tube. Designed by Lewis Tsalis, it was released with T-26 in 1994. [Edit: no, it’s rather David Quay Mekanik (1988), with a modified N, see comments.] The subline “The Invasion Continues” is added in stretched Futura Extra Bold.

The poster for the theatrical release is credited to B.D. Fox & Friends Advertising. The tagline is in Engravers Roman.

The Blu-ray Disc cover has the title with a monochrome bevel effect. The tagline here is shown in Futura Condensed.

The quote on the back of the DVD cover is in Industria. Additional text uses several styles from Helvetica.

Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブルー) is a 1997 Japanese animated psychological thriller directed by Satoshi Kon. The movie poster shown above features the title in shaded and reversed Plaza. The tagline “excuse me … who are you?” is in OCR-A. Other fonts used on it include Tube, Times New Roman, and Gill Sans. The Blu-ray/DVD cover shown below uses Trajan.

The 1982 film The Beastmaster was released on DVD and VHS by Anchor Bay Entertainment in 2001. This was the first time the film was made available on DVD, though it had previously been released on VHS with different cover designs.

For this release, a new logo was designed using Morpheus. The glyphs were modified slightly by unjoining the s’s and raising the heights of the t’s in “BeastMaster” (but not in “the”).

The new logo closely resembles that of the contemporary BeastMaster TV series (which used Mason Serif).

Terror Express (Italian: La ragazza del vagone letto, lit. “The girl in the sleeping car”, 1980) is a 1979 Italian horror-crime film directed by Ferdinando Baldi and starring Silvia Dionisio. The upcoming Blu-ray by Rarovideo appropriately sports the font Cinema Macabre on its cover art, with a straightforward title treatment that takes full advantage of the alternative characters built into this font. You’ll notice that all four of the small cap R characters have a slightly different appearance. This helps to avoid repetitious characters, which always ruins a hand-drawn aesthetic.

The Cinema Macabre font was heavily influenced by the Italian giallo brand of horror, a more murder-mystery-led genre made famous by films such as Suspiria, Deep Red, and Tenebrae, so it’s interesting to see the work go full circle and appear on a Giallo reissue.

Need for Speed: Carbon is a racing video game released on October 31, 2006, and the tenth installment in the Need For Speed series. Developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts, it was released for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, Wii, Windows, and Mac OS X.

The “Need For Speed” logotype is based on Serpentine Sans, modified to feature a hyper-extended exit stroke for S. It’s unclear if “Carbon” is based on a font, or custom drawn.

The back cover combines 911 Porscha (italicized), Comsat Navy Box, Rally, and Helvetica Condensed.

Beginning Rock Guitar is an instructional DVD released in 2005 by Musician’s Workshop. Hosted by Paul Lidel, it's focused on teaching viewers how to master the guitar, complete with instructions on recreating famous guitar parts from various artists.

Franklin Gothic Condensed (possibly Bitstream’s digitization) is the main font used here, paired with two more fonts on the front: Lucida Big Casual and Impress. The latter is another font by Bitstream, and is namely a digitization of Filmotype Prima.

Dzielny mały toster is the Polish dub of the 1987 Disney movie The Brave Little Toaster. Its plot is about the adventures of an anthropomorphic toaster and his appliance friends.

On this DVD packaging from 2008, “Toster” uses David Berlow’s Sand, with double contour, gradient fill and drop shadow. “Pełny dubbing aktorski” uses a bold wide version of Helvetica. “Dzielny mały” probably started out with Helvetica, too. The explanation of the movie on the back is set in Helvetica Condensed Bold. “Dzielna piątka” features Palette with straight quote marks.

Produced in 2006, the Special Collectors Edition shown here was issued in 2011. “The Joe Strummer Story” is set in Insurgent, a grunge font with built-in underline that, in the Pro version, offers support for extended Latin, extended Cyrillic and Greek alphabets. “Clash” is in caps from Helvetica Compressed, shaded, filled with a gradient, and with letters in different sizes and at different angles. “Special Collectors Edition” is set in the similar Impact. The lines at the bottom feature all-caps Univers Bold.

Some of these fonts including Insurgent were also used for the Brazilian edition by Videobrokers from 2009.

“Motor” is set in FF DIN’s Condensed Black Italic style with a modified R. The game website uses additional styles from the FF DIN family.

“Fest” is set in a custom-made font called Motorfest, or Motorfest DeskScript. It’s only available inside Motorfest’s Fan Kit that can be accessed through Ubisoft's Rewards Page.

Only Fools and Horses logo

The 1980s British sitcom Only Fools and Horses makes prolific use of the hand-written Mistral typeface as its eternally recognisable signature design theme. Roger Excoffon’s 1953 design can be seen in its logo, titles, credits and endless merchandise – taking advantage of its instant recognisability to capture the attention of the shows fans.

Ironically, in the West Coast of America gangster rappers NWA and their founder Eazy-E did the same with Mistral also!

Robot Wars is a 1993 American cyberpunk film directed by Albert Band and written by Charles Band and Jackson Barr. It tells the story of a hotshot mech pilot in a post-apocalyptic 2041 who must stop mech hijackers from provoking global war.

The film was originally released on VHS by Paramount Home Video. Some consider the film a sequel to Robot Jox (1989), though the storylines are unrelated.

The film's title is rendered in lettering loosely based on Earth, perhaps inspired by another film series dealing with robot wars. The tagline is set in Eurostile. Additional text set in Helvetica Condensed. Later releases on DVD, Blu-ray and video-on-demand have the film's title set in Anklepants.

Sinatra in Palm Springs is a 2018 documentary film directed by Leo Zahn, starring Barbara Marx, Tom Dreesen, and David Cohen. From IMDb:

Palm Springs, a small desert oasis 100 miles East of Los Angeles was Sinatra's true home for 50 years. During his brief yet turbulent marriage to Ava Gardner his Palm Springs home was center stage. For the rest of his life, the Rancho Mirage compound on Frank Sinatra Drive, was the home he called “My Heaven”. Palm Springs still feels the ghost of Frank Sinatra.

The cover of the DVD (and Blu-Ray Disc) release by Shout! Media recently came up on fontid.co. It features a condensed sans in the American Gothic style, used in all caps with alternating line colors. Kevin Thompson identified it as Alpin Gothic. This typeface was designed by André Gürtler (1936–2021) of Team’77 as a modernization of ATF’s Alternate Gothic. It was released by Compugraphic in 1974, in at least four numbered styles plus one italic.

Alpin Gothic is distinguished from Alternate Gothic by a number of refinements: the bowl of a isn’t saggy, E and F have longer middle bars, the waistline of G was raised, the center of M doesn’t thin out as much, s and S have smaller apertures and perfectly horizontal terminals, and the ear in g as well as the tail in Q were made horizontal. A digital version, CG Alpin Gothic, was once available through Monotype, but is no longer shown at the time of writing.

MTV Unplugged is a live album by Tony Bennett that was released in 1994. Backed by the Ralph Sharon Trio, Bennett appeared on the TV show MTV Unplugged to showcase the Great American Songbook with guest appearances by Elvis Costello and k.d. lang.

The album reached platinum record status in the United States and won Grammy Awards in 1995 for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Album of the Year.

The typography prominently features a typeface that was inescapable in the mid 1990s: designed by Just van Rossum of LettError, FF Confidential was released in 1992 with the fledgling FontFont, back then the font label “by designers for designers” (which was acquired by Monotype twenty-two years later, in 2014). The condensed sans-serif caps with the stamped look are part of FF InstantTypes, a series of five fonts based on found letterforms.

In 1992, there was no OpenType yet. Still, Confidential included two forms for each alphabetic character, one in the uppercase, one in the lowercase. This feature would have come in handy had the designer wanted to obscure the fact that the cover typography is made with a digital font rather than with actual rubberstamps: between Tony Bennett’s name and “Unplugged”, there are lots of repeating characters including three pairs in direct succession. But no, none of the alternates were uses; all glyphs come from the more eroded set of caps.

The MTV Unplugged session was recorded forty-three years after Bennett’s first number-one hit, “Because of You” from 1951, and more than twenty years before the musician set a Guinness World Record for “oldest person to reach No.1 on the US Album Chart with a newly recorded album”, with Cheek to Cheek, a collaboration with Lady Gaga from 2014. With the release of the follow-up Love for Sale in 2021, he broke another record for being the oldest person to release an album of new material. Tony Bennett died this week in Manhattan, a few weeks before his 97th birthday. RIP.

Grand Slang (Nikolas Type), Archia (Atipo) and the Korean typeface Sandoll 고딕Neo1유니코드 (Sandoll) in use for the Blue-ray box set of Céline Sciamma’s Trilogie. The coming-of-age trilogy by the French director consists of Naissance des pieuvres (Water Lilies, 2007), Tomboy (2011), and Bande de filles (Girlhood, 2014).

Designed by Studio Gomin in Seoul, the trilogy collection comes with a high-quality outer box and digipak case, an 80-pages mini book, as well as beautifully blind embossed postcard sets that remind of Polaroids, displaying six stills per film.

In collaboration with Nikolas Type, Studio Gomin made a transformation of Grand Slang to express the symbol of growth and anxiety, to emotionally match this special collection.

Céline Sciamma coming of age trilogy set in the Korean Design Annual.

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and developed by Brian Graden for Comedy Central. The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town.

The town sign of South Park is virtually the hallmark of the series, and has been consistently represented that way for decades since its inception. But despite the praise and honor many label the font itself on the South Park sign as Cibola, when it is in fact Thunderbird, specifically a widened Thunderbird Extra Condensed. This can be seen when comparing the K and R with Cibola’s; unlike Thunderbird, it is slightly different.

Lately South Park movie posters have been using the Behemoth font, specifically PL Behemoth Semi Condensed typeface (see the Streaming Wars poster below).

Additionally, South Park and its franchise has always been accompanied by a certain all caps and cutout font (see second picture below). This font was made only for the series, and to my knowledge was not marketed publicly for commercial use. An emulation with some differences however was used on their official website, it is available for download online as South Park ":)Smilie version", the original production typeface is still unknown.

Cover designs for the four-film collection Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989–1997, which includes Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. The DVD collection was first released as an 8-disc set in 2005. It was later rereleased in Blu-ray format as a 4-disc set in 2009.

SpikerSerif, a font from the Spiker typeface family designed by Austin Putnam, is used for the cover title of the anthology and for the cover title of each film. Some glyphs have been modified (see B, 7, 8). Additional text is set in Alexon, Engravers Gothic and FB Agency.
