Description of the project by Team Thursday, the designers of the book:

We recently made this publication Kunst maakt ruimte for the art collection of the Rijksoverheid. The collection exists for 10 years and the works are installed over all Rijksoverheid buildings in the Netherlands. The publication celebrates the collection and highlights a selection of the artists and designers. It can be folded out twice, which leads to different page/image combinations.

The book uses Rijksoverheid Sans for body text, paired with nono by notyourtypefoundry for the titles, footnotes, and page numbers. The photographs were taken by Mike Bink and the lithography was produced by Studio Marc Gijzen.

In 2024, the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia issued the Resolution on the National Programme for Culture in Slovenia (Slovenian: Resolucija o nacionalnem programu za kulturo) for the period between 2024 and 2031. It is the main document outlining the program and development goals that the Ministry aims to achieve during this and possible future mandates.

Under the theme of “Imagine Democratic Regeneration”, this yearbook explores a diverse range of artistic visions and interdisciplinary approaches on the future of liberal democracy and the democratic design of a regenerative way of life and economic culture in the age of artificial intelligence. It was published by the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs – Directorate General for International Cultural Relations, Vienna 2024. The bilingual publication (German and English) is available for download from the Ministry’s website.

I recently borrowed a typewriter, and while it is not a government-issued Remington, I still got some use out of this booklet produced by the US government for typists.

Stymie is used for “Typewriter” and the series title at the top. “Care” is custom script lettering. “Prepared by” is in Coronet. The text below is set in Stymie’s Medium, Bold Condensed, and Extrabold styles.

Stymie is also used on the inside for headings, and the single drop cap (on page 2). It’s paired with the similar Memphis for subheadings and captions.

I'm not sure what the main body text is set in. It appears to be some sort of Baskerville.

Page 4 with figure 1 looks like a reproduction of a postcard or a poster that may have been made and distributed alongside or as well as the pamphlet. The text on it is handlettering.

Page 5 is typical of the rest of the pamphlet, with Stymie for the title and Memphis for smaller headings and captions.

F37 Lineca is used across the new identity of FORUM, a federal contracting platform. A modified version of the regular weight is used as the logo, while headings and body are set in the off-the-shelf version.

The covers and the various slanted pages

The two publications were born within a collaboration between Iuav of Venice and the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and were developed in the Communication 2 laboratory held by Professor Luciano Perondi, assisted by Bruno Calza.

The aim is to tell the story of the data on PNRR and PINQuA in an innovative way, with the only constraint being the omega-point bound A4 format.

The first book gives an overview starting with the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) at the European level and then focusing on the Italian situation. This track ends with an introductory sentence to PINQuA (National Innovative Program for Housing Quality). The second book, on the other hand, provides a general overview of PINQuA, with a specific focus on Mission 5 of the program.

The graphics in the book were created with a program created through P5.js, which repeats letters and changes their size based on the gray value of a previously uploaded image.

To further bring out this need for a change of perspective and to mark the fact that things change if people want them to, each page, in fact, undergoes a rotation of 11.25° from the previous one, leading the book to make a complete rotation of 180° as a whole, an aid in this is provided by the “handles”, visual cues that suggest how to position the hands to support the book while reading. This solution not only facilitates the enjoyment of the printed material, but also adds an interactive and functional element to the design.

A decent example of Miller & Richard's Grotesque No. 4 Italic, which, for all its quirks, looks perfectly at home on a no-nonsense government notice. I particularly like the flinching f, echoed in Fred Smeijers’ vintage-inspired Ludwig, which uses it—quite pragmatically—in ligatures.

The other typefaces are mysteries to me, and I would appreciate any help in identifying them—especially the interloping 3s in “30th SEPTEMBER” and “3 a.m.” and the O in “On and after,” which differs a bit from the others.

Ludwig Black and Black Italic by Fred Smeijers. The f flinches à la Grotesque No. 4 Italic to make way for l, f, t, and i, but stands (or leans) straight next to o. (The second f in “off” flinches in solidarity with the first, I suppose.)

Hollywood a.k.a. Cinema is a geometric biform sans with round glyphs that are much wider than the rest. As far as I can tell, it was issued by FotoStar/Facsimile Fonts in the first half of the 1970s, as a close follower of Epic (1968) by Lettergraphics.

In 1974, Todd Sanders used the shaded style – Hollywood Shaded, or Cinema One – for an anthology of texts on American Government seen through the lens of science fiction, published by Rand McNally. It was compiled by Joseph D. Olander, Martin H. Greenberg, and Patricia Warrick.

The poster shown above may have been one of the original uses of ITC Bernase Roman (my theory: Bernie Zlotnick + Tom Carnase). Adverts with Bernase Roman appeared in magazines in January 1969, February 1969, and March 1969.

TT Supermolot is a signature part of the Institutes of Microelectronics and Photonics Łukasiewicz.

The Łukasiewicz Research Network currently includes seven thousand employees and 22 research institutes located in twelve cities in Poland. Łukasiewicz is one of the largest research networks in Europe.

TT Fors is the signature font of the GreeNYC project.

GreeNYC is a program from the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability dedicated to educating, engaging and mobilizing New Yorkers to help New York City meet its ambitious sustainability goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

GreeNYC helps New Yorkers understand the complex challenges of climate change and empowers them to take actions for their community and the planet. From individual actions to participatory governance, this is a program that supports New Yorkers in creating systemic change and asks them to use their voice to influence how New York City government delivers sustainability to all communities.

The central element of the entire visual style is the military trident – the trident (or tryzub, Ukrainian: тризуб) of the Ukrainian People’s Republic’s People’s Army. Therefore, the entire identity system is primarily based on historical heritage. As these symbols have already been used on shoulder patches, they are recognizable.

The graphic style is built upon the new symbols of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, or AFU (known in Ukraine as ZSU; Ukrainian: ЗСУ), which have a clear historical foundation. It incorporates the best practices of international military symbolism.

The primary typeface, UAF Sans, was developed by Dmytro Rastvortsev. The design embodies the finest Ukrainian typographic traditions, military style, and fulfills all communication needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. There are also variations available for nameplates and equipment.

For the design of honorary certificates, acknowledgments, credentials for awards, award letters, and for awards and battle (honorary) flags of military units of the AFU, the ceremonial typeface Volja is used. Volja was designed by Marchela Mozhyna based on the lettering of the well-known Ukrainian graphic artist of the times of the national liberation struggles, Nil Khasevich.

This publication is the annual report for the Althingi Ombudsman. Althingi is Iceland’s parliament (and the oldest ongoing parliament in the world). The role of the Althingi Ombudsman is to monitor the administration of the State and local authorities and safeguard the rights of the citizens vis-à-vis the authorities.

Once a year they publish their annual report, which is a public document, but is mostly used by the government, listing the outcomes of the closed cases from last year.

Reykjavík-based design studio Kolofon was tasked with creating a design language for this report and others Althingi Ombudsman produces. Some are laid out by Kolofon, some done in-house via a template – but always true to the design language.

Kolofon comments:

While the report might not look that complicated at first, the need for a diverse typographic layout was important, to convey the different types of information, references to laws, sections and more – which called for the use of a well-designed typeface as the main font. We found the Tuna family while browsing online and it fit the bill perfectly. Both in the ways of being a robust family that could handle our needs well – but also visually. It is paired with Trade Gothic.

Oslo based digital design agency Feed Oslo made a new website and identity system for the Norwegian Civil Affairs Authority (Sivilrettsforvaltningen). A client working to protect the legal rights of all Norwegian citizens. The website is set in Store Norske Ja Regular, and Store Norske Ja Mono Regular.

Mukta is used for the Covid pandemic campaign across the state of Maharashtra as well as for the infographics by the Prime Minister’s Office in Hindi language.

Designer Ben Denzer encodes Ballast in a type-only cover for Democracy’s Data: The Hidden Stories in the U.S. Census and How to Read Them by Dan Bouk. Bold compressed type combined with strategic color make for a memorable typographic image and an effective reading of a long title.

Branding and digital communications for United24, the initiative of the President of Ukraine.

United24 was launched by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the main venue for collecting charitable donations in support of Ukraine. Funds will be transferred to the official accounts of the National Bank of Ukraine and allocated by assigned ministries to cover the most pressing needs.

Designed by famous Ukrainian agency Fedoriv using the Nuber Next typeface.

Graphic design studio Paprika has designed a new commemorative stamp for Canada Post to mark the 70th anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Love is used as the main typeface, paired with a yet unidentified typeface [It’s Mirador, see comments].

The monarch is represented under her iconic profile, created by sculptor Arnold Machin and used by the Royal Mail since 1967. The composition is full of elegance. It offers a delicate play of overlapping typography combined with a platinum finish that gives the whole the pomp of a great celebration.

In 2019, the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Chilean Ministry of Social Development and Family (Indigenous Affairs Unit) published a series of dictionaries of native languages ​​in Chile, following a policy of cultural revitalization and inclusive development. Now a revised second edition followed.

These four dictionaries dedicated to the Aymara, Quechua, Mapuche, and Rapa Nui languages are a significant contribution to the future of the various native languages spoken in Chile. The dictionaries are available for free download. All covers were designed entirely with Amster. The interiors are set in ITC Franklin Gothic, with Ronnia used for headings.
