Spiral (1995) and Loop (1998) are the two sequels to Ring (1991), a mystery horror novel by Japanese author Koji Suzuki. Just like the first book in the trilogy, the dust jackets for the first UK editions of these books from 2004 and 2006 use Typo American, too. Title and author name are presented in all-lowercase letters.

The Bantam-Seal edition of this Inspector McDumont mystery by Canadian novelist Hugh Garner (1913–1979) was published in 1979. The font in use is Photo-Lettering’s Rubens Bold. Issued by 1965, this style is the widest of several extra widths added to their adaptation of Rubens.

The other (below) goes a little harder: here, the title is set in the italic style of Benguiat Cooper Black Swash, a variant by Ed Benguiat that adds extra weight and swagger.

Written by Honobu Yonezawa, Shōshimin Series (小市民シリーズ) is a Japanese mystery novel series that began in 2004, with six volumes released as of April 2024. A TV anime adaptation of the first and second novel, produced by Lapin Track, was aired from July to September 2024, while the third and fifth novel started airing in April 2025.

The logo for the anime series was designed by the Japanese graphic design firm atd inc. The typefaces used in the title uses a mix of Morisawa's A1 Gothic (M) for the top half and Ryumin (Bold KL) for the bottom half, while the kana below uses DNP’s Shuei Antique. The English text in the middle is Amstajul Bafett by Abas Creative, a type foundry based in Indonesia.

Dimension 20: Fantasy High: Junior Year is the 21st season of the tabletop role-playing game show produced by and broadcast on Dropout TV, and the 3rd season of the Fantasy High campaign. DM'd by Brennan Lee Mulligan, The Bad Kids now face a rival adventuring party, attempt to solve the mystery of their missing member, and the greatest challenge of all: actually passing their classes and doing extra circulars.

This season of Fantasy High introduces a new logo, with the main title set in Espiritu Condensed Ligatures and the subtitle set in Fairplex. All character information and portrait titles use the font Carrotflower.

This logo in particular would later become a standard for all marketing of the campaign, which can be seen with some of the later content made about Fantasy High: Freshman Year.

Not of This World, 1973

Two books by Peter Kolosimo (1922–1984), one of the founders of pseudoarchaeology who popularized ancient astronaut theories of contact between extraterrestrial beings and ancient human civilizations, published by Bantam Books in the 1970s.

The titles are set in caps from West Behemoth (1960), with contour and drop shadow. The author’s name and the teasers use the similar – but much older – Egyptienne Bold Condensed. Caledonia is used for the lists of topics, with ellipses for the first book and question marks for the second one.

Timeless Earth, 1975

Benguiat Zenedipity pairs bell-bottoms with bracketed slab serifs at the top. In 1968, it was chosen as the main typeface for the poster advertising 5 Card Stud, a Western mystery film starring Dean Martin (“the hellfire gambler”) and Robert Mitchum (“the gunfire preacher”). It was directed by Henry Hathaway and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Other typefaces featured on the poster include a bold (semi?)condensed Eurostile, Optima, Folio Extra Condensed (“Hal Wallis”), and News Gothic Extra Condensed (“Inger Stevens, Roddy McDowall”).

The Panic Table is a dynamic tabletop roleplaying game show produced by Failure Island, a NYC-based creative agency and production company. The futuristic branding is anchored by a space-age wordmark and symbol, designed by Natalie Saldivar, using a modified version of Nguyen Gobber’s expressive and geometric Monopol. Supporting text is rendered in the science fiction-inspired Zen Dots by Yoshimichi Ohira and Space Grotesk by Florian Karsten, with the show’s theme, “Unaccompanied Miners,” styled in Game of Squids by Darrell Flood.

The Panic Table is New York City’s most electrifying blend of comedy, sci-fi, and horror, presented as a dynamic tabletop roleplaying game show. Featuring five talented actors, each episode immerses viewers in kooky, spooky, edge-of-your-seat storytelling and spontaneous humour. Bandersnatch is a graphic interpretation of an interactive episode from the Black Mirror series, in which we follow Stefan, a young developer from the 1980s who is trying to create a game based on a “choose your own adventure” book: Bandersnatch.

To create this book, I focused on gathering all the possible endings from the episode. The inside of the book consists of halftone screenshots and dialogues rewritten in a tone reminiscent of a “choose your own adventure” book.

The Redaction typeface serves as a bridge between the halftone images and the video game featured in the episode.

In 1960, producers Nat Cohen and Stuart Levy acquired the film rights to all of crime/fantasy/scifi/adventure writer Edgar Wallace’s books and stories. From Wikipedia:

The Edgar Wallace Mysteries is a British second-feature film series mainly produced at Merton Park Studios for Anglo-Amalgamated. There were 48 films in the series, which were released between 1960 and 1965. The series was screened as The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre on television in the United States.

The series’ opening titles are set in Imre Reiner’s Mercurius Script (Monotype, 1957) and a yet unidentified sans serif. It could be another typeface by Monotype – Headline Bold, or its predecessor, Stephenson Blake’s Grotesque No. 9.

In 1935, Anglo-Irish poet Cecil Day-Lewis (1904–1972) wanted to supplement his income by writing a detective novel. He created a pseudonym, Nicholas Blake, and published A Question of Proof. Over the following years, protogonist Nigel Strangeways, amateur investigator and gentleman detective, would appear in sixteen novels. The Smiler with the Knife (1939) “features a Fascist organisation plotting to overthrow British democracy.” [Wikipedia]

Before the rise of stat cameras and phototypesetting, it was quicker and cheaper to draw big letters for titles by hand. Often the designers would base the letterforms on existing typefaces. In this case it was Georg Trump’s City (1930) that served as the model. The characteristic unilateral slab serifs and the squarish O were preserved. The only major structural difference is that in the typeface, the vertex of M doesn’t reach the baseline. The question mark and the author’s name appear to be custom creations.

A classic case of LTypI: City Bold for City of Revelation.

Written by English esotericist John Michell (1933–2009), it’s the sequel to The View Over Atlantis, which the Fortean Times described as “probably the most important book in the history of the hippy/underground movement.” City of Revelation was first published by the Garnstone Press in 1972, with the subtitle On the Proportions and Symbolic Numbers of the Cosmic Temple. This is Ballantine’s 1977 paperback edition. According to Wikipedia,

This work was more complex than its predecessor, including chapters on sacred geometry, numerology, gematria, and the esoteric concept of the New Jerusalem, and required an understanding of mathematics and Classics to follow its arguments.
