Live & Well is a two-part electric blues album by B.B. King: the “Live” session (tracks 1 to 5) was performed in March 1969 live at the Village Gate in New York, whereas the “Well” session (tracks 6 to 10) is a studio recording made at The Hit Factory in January 1969. It was released as gatefold by BluesWay Records later that year.

The cover design by Byron Goto and Henry Epstein makes early use of Montgomery Pousse Cafe. The photography is by Ellen McNeilly.

Back cover with reversed (and too light) Helvetica caps

Yer’ Album is James Gang’s debut studio album, released in early 1969, on the labels Bluesway, and ABC. Cover design by Henry Epstein, with art by Ladimer Jeric and photography by Bill Szymczyk. The dimensional stencil letters are from Calendar, which was (first?) shown in Photo-Lettering’s Alphabet Yearbook 1969. The title is probably in Melior Graphic, see also this paperback cover.

The image depicts the German release which came out only in 1974, after their second LP Rides Again was so successful.

The typeface used for the cover of B.B. King’s fourteenth studio album from 1968 is West Barnum Ultra from Photo-Lettering, Inc., set in tightly spaced capitals, in sky blue on top of dark blue. From the liner notes:

“My ambition is to have been one of the greatest blues singers there have ever been” says B. B. King. It’s admirable to know that this is his ambition, as many of his followers think he already is the greatest.
In this electronic generation, where most every thing is now either in, out, on or off, B. B. King comes off as way above todays musical maelstrom.

The back cover features a number of other, less heavy slab serifs. “B.B. King” is Bartuska Breton. “Arranged and conducted” is set in Beton. The text typeface used for the liner notes appears to be a version of Stymie with its alternate monocular ‘a’.
