Retinal Rivalry is the soundtrack to Cyprien Gaillard’s 2024 stereoscopic film and is released by PAN as a special picture-disc vinyl and a digital edition. For its titles, they chose the delicate Ceraph by Emma Piercy, available at Sharp Type. Named after the visual phenomenon of conflicting perception, the work pushes the limits of both image and sound, using ultra-high-speed 3D projection to render everyday urban landscapes uncanny and hyper-real. Its dissonant score – combining reworked Indonesian instrumental music, industrial field recordings, and bodily sounds – underscores the film’s destabilising vision, while quoting Aguirre, the Wrath of God by Werner Herzog with music by Popol Vuh. Conceived as a stand-alone sonic work within PAN’s ENTOPIA series, the soundtrack treats sound not as accompaniment but as a structuring force, amplifying the film’s tension between sensory overload, disorientation, and moments of fragile beauty. The film will be presented at Haus der Kunst in Munich from October 17, 2025, to March 8, 2026.

Every year, Biergarten Brewery & Kitchen celebrates the Karnataka Food Festival by incorporating ingredients rooted in Kannada food culture. For 2024, a trip to Mysore led us to Rajamudi, a red rice once favoured by royalty, which became the inspiration for crafting a special Mysore Lager for the festival. The visual language draws from Mysore’s royal heritage, blending the vibrancy of palace interiors, vintage Kannada film posters, and old postal stamps into a lively colour palette that echoes both royal splendour and the state flag.

Expressing this cultural blend, we used Bungee, the brand’s primary display typeface, and anchored this in local context with Anek Kannada, for its semi-rounded, contemporary interpretation of the Kannada script. The softness and rhythmic curves of Anek Kannada offer a striking balance to Bungee’s rigid, modular forms, creating a dynamic typographic interplay across headlines, labels, and motion assets. P22 Underground is used as the supporting typeface, providing clean, legible structure for body copy and functional text.

The videography extends this typographic and visual sensibility into motion. Inspired by 1980s Sandalwood cinema, it features bold, stacked type treatments set against scenes from Mysore’s royalty.

Personally I Find It Rude to Be Boring is a 2024 short film directed by Derek Spencer and starring Rachel Rivera, Acacia Fisher, Dakota Loesch, Mike Merchant, and others.

The film titles were designed by YENCE Studio.

Derek Spencer’s director statement:

No one is a good person at 3 am. We stretch ourselves too far, we get too high, we abandon useful boundaries and norms as our cravings grow more desperate. The after-hours party is a liminal space between pleasure and danger, interesting and obnoxious, cool and cringe. We know this, but we yearn for the night out anyway. Because you never know what might happen. Because staying in is a concession to entropy and death. Because we’d all secretly rather be bad than boring.

Personally I Find It Rude to Be Boring is about cycles of pleasure-seeking. It’s about how we justify destructive behavior in search of ephemeral gratification. It’s about the solitude of pleasure—characters who can only look at themselves even as they are surrounded by friends. For me, it’s also about nostalgia. Current pleasure never feels as good as we remember past pleasure feeling. In a world still collectively processing the social damage done by a global pandemic, we ask: is it possible to feel as good as we remember feeling? And if we can, is it worth it?

I have designed the typography for Remi Laudat’s short movie Afro-Arab. It includes the names and identities of the protagonists set in La Grotesque in both Arabic and English, as well as the movie credits and a custom lettering piece for the movie title.

This film explores the complexities and experiences of what it means to be Afro-Arab. For many years Africa and the Middle East have been connected. However not many people speak about the nuances and experience of the people who are born from the fusion of both cultures. The merging of two worlds – Africa and the Arabian Peninsula – create an identity that is known as Afro-Arab.

La Grotesque is co-designed by Naïma Ben Ayed (Arabic) and Francesca Bolognini (Latin). It was designed in an effort to create Arabic‭ and ‬Latin in collaboration‭, ‬like a conversation among friends‭, ‬like a meal you prepare together. La Grotesque is a fun summer trip from Marseille (France) to La Marsa (Tunisia) via Marsala (Italy), celebrating the interconnectedness of the Mediterranean triangle that forms our cultural heritages.

Retirement Plan (2024), directed by John Kelly and voiced by Domhnall Gleeson, is a critically acclaimed animated short that took home both Best Animated Short and the Audience Award at SXSW Festival.

Daly & Lyon contributed supporting typography, including the film credits and select promotional materials, using Symbol Bold by British Standard Type.

Flora is a short film created as a graduation project by Omer Dolev, from the Screen-Based Arts Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.

The film explores the concept of death through an abstract interpretation of the Kubler-Ross model, blending narrative and documentary elements. It combines texts and images in both documentary and fictional forms, creating scenes where the line between reality and fiction is intentionally blurred.

The film follows three characters at different stages of a mysterious, fatal disease, which causes a rash resembling thorns and petals to spread across their bodies, ultimately leading to death. Through the characters' journeys, Flora delves into the emotional, psychological, and existential struggles faced while coping with loss.

The film's main title uses the Rieven Unical typeface, complemented by custom Hebrew lettering designed by Ron Robert Levy.

Marriage Unplugged is a short film written and produced by the Nüesch sisters, Florine and Kim. It tells the story of a frustrated couple in their fifties who resort to a sex robot as a final attempt to salvage their crumbling marriage, unwittingly uncovering the very fractures that damaged it in the first place. It has been awarded the Jury Prize in the Fanomenon category by the Leeds International Film Festival. Clio Ha designed the movie poster and the trailer credits using Selva Script alongside Neue Helvetica.

One Day Something Terrible Is Going to Happen is a short film by the Croatian director Dalija Dozet:

Maša, beset by anxious reality in which she takes care of her ill mother, flees into the world of imagination, trying to create her own fairy tale. A phone call informs her of the death of a man she doesn’t even know and she, without too much hesitation, decides to attend his funeral. Maša’s newly found view on transience helps her to reconnect with her mother.

The visual identity is dominated by black and deep blue tones, evoking an unsettling, dreamlike atmosphere. It purposefully departs from the color scheme of the movie and tries to encapsulate the tension between real-life drama and the haunting quality of a dark fairy tale. The main visual is an image of a young deer, its form duplicated and distorted, creating a ghostly, otherworldly effect that mirrors the protagonist’s inner turmoil and the looming presence of fear in the story.

The stark white, all-caps title — set in the high-contrast Ergon typeface reminiscent of stone carvings — adds a sense of gravitas and timelessness to the design. This visual language, combining the natural fragility of the deer with the weighty typography, amplifies the tension between vulnerability and strength, fear and growth. The poster is both eerie and poetic, reflecting the film’s exploration of a young girl’s journey through anxiety, self-discovery, and the uncertain path to adulthood.

Ergon is also the only typeface used in the movie, including the end credits. In the movie itself, the type is always blue on a black background, making the design of the film quite prominent and distinctive.

Under the label Svensk Kortfilm c/o Folkets Bio, the Stockholm based cinema Zita has been showcasing high-quality Swedish short films. Since its inception in 2008, more than 100 films have been included in the program.

Fredrika Frykstrand designed the materials for the 2022 edition, using Knopp and Rigid Square.

Milk is a short film written and directed by Madeline Leary. The movie poster, title and credits were designed by Jay K Darvishian. The fonts in use are Playground designed by Francesca Bolognini and Mathieu Desjardins and available from Pangram Pangram, and Neue Helvetica.

A Kind of Testament is a 2D animated short film by French director Stephen Vuillemin:

Two women with the same first and last names. By chance, they are not related and have never met. One, young and pretty, regularly posts photos of herself on social networks. The other, older, has just died of cancer.

Produced by Remembers, the 16-minute film premiered at the Berlinale Shorts 2023. The poster and the credits use Gaya.

Quato (Half Ounce) is a short film directed by Montreal filmmaker Alexandre Nachi.

With the film title in mind, the design concept involved consistently using half of every format, making the title stretch and adapt to each format. The title treatment also reflects the character’s experiences throughout the film.

Repair title screen

After an embarrassing encounter at the supermarket, Ramin is forced to confront the one thing he can't seem to fix: himself.

Repair is a short film by Bertil Nilsson.

The film was an official selection at the Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Film Festival 2023, BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival 2023 and. London Short Film Festival 2023.

A bitmapped Elephant Black is used for the movie title. The condensed sans on the posters is yet unidentified [edit: it’s Input Sans, see comments].

OHMshorts – Festival of Moving Image took place in November 2023 at the TH Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences. The festival showed students work of the Design faculty, offering a diverse range of films, from drama to comedy and everything in between.

Markus Lange designed the identity and Moritz Schwindt the animation.

The task was to design a visual identity for the new festival. In addition to the use of classic print media such as posters and merchandise, however, the main focus was on designing various animated image formats outside and inside the movie theater to guide the audience through the evening.

The design combines three typefaces by Benoît Bodhuin, Harber, Pimpit and Gikit.

Titles, posters and credits for Dopamina, a fashion film directed by Nico Corvino and Sofia Tormenta for the Sabrina Ol brand in Mexico City.

We chose Monjiro for the title due to the its nature – hard to read, but fluid. And we used Serial Typewriter Compressed Emboss for the text, trying to simulate the emboss effect on metal. Both typefaces work really well with metal texture and low-contrast colors.

Amelie Bormann has designed the titles and posters for Peter Salling’s short film Sælhud (“Seal skin”), a graduation project produced by 18 Frames and Adomeit Film. The script is written by Morten Schmidt, and the movie is produced by Zara Bækkelund Kristensen.

The movie titles are set in the Middle cut of Store Norske Nora, from Skriftkompani. The fonts used for the credits appear to be Libre Baskerville by Pablo Impallari
and Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Instrument Sans, also by Fuenzalida.

Span and the Emmy Award-winning performance collective Manual Cinema co-created a short film and original theatrical work entitled Countdown that combines handmade shadow puppetry, live actors, music performance, and Span’s digital animation.

Countdown follows an unnamed protagonist as she attempts to escape from numbers that frantically shift around her. Beginning with the handmade sets and projected cinematic techniques by Manual Cinema, the piece visually evolves into a 3D digital world created and animated by Span.

Countdown was conceived by partner John Pobojewski who led the art direction, design, and animation for Span’s digital landscapes together with Zach Minnich and Valeria Bernal. Manual Cinema’s Sarah Fornace, Drew Dir, and Julia Miller led the story development and puppetry performance. Music and sound was composed by Ben Kauffman and Kyle Vegter.

The numerals set throughout the piece include custom typography drawn by Valeria Bernal and Nick Adam, as well as the most amount of typefaces we’ve ever used, including: Adieu, HWT Aetna, Bodoni, Camera, Central Avenue, Dirk, Eklips, Empire Fold, Geometric, Gravity, Hoefler Text, Inline, HWT Konop, Megavolt, Sharp Grotesk, Trois Mille, United Sans and WTF Empire.

Manual Cinema use “vintage overhead projectors, multiple screens, puppets, actors, live feed cameras, multi-channel sound design, and a live music ensemble to transform the experience of attending the cinema and imbue it with liveness, ingenuity, and theatricality.” They have received national recognition by the New York Times and were featured in the 2021 film remake of Candyman directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele.

Daisy is a 16mm short film created by director David J Adams in late 2023, featuring model Daisy Parker, together with poems that she wrote and then read.

The graphics were designed by London-based creative studio and publisher Cash & Carry. The title is set in Plain Form's Ready Active, sporting a bold red and a slight three-dimensional effect, as if traced with lipstick – or written in blood. Credits and subtitles use Dinamo's Gaisyr Mono with its recognizable ‘butterfly’ serifs.

Shots is an international short film festival taking place in the town Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia. The festival shows 20 to 30 short films every year from a vast selection of more than 1,500 submissions from all over the world. This approach ensures high quality in the program while maintaining a manageable quantity for every visitor. The program ranges from feature to documentary and animated shorts.

The poster for the 2023 edition of the festival was designed by Alja Herlah, featuring Spektra Tekst published by Dotless Type. Spektra Tekst is a youthful offspring of Type Salon’s Spektra. The letterforms are defined by the unified counter shape that is the main feature of the original typeface. Designed in five weights for both Latin and Cyrillic scripts, Spektra Tekst offers versatility and adaptability to various design needs.
