French edition of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Nachtstücke (1816/1817; English: Night Pieces), translated by Philippe Forget and beautifully illustrated by Tristan Bonnemain. The book design uses Rector for titles and Adobe Garamond for the running text. From the website of the publisher, Les éditions du Typhon:

To plunge into this illustrated book is to follow the devil who, in the evening, amuses himself by frightening the bourgeois; to grow fond of a young man petrified by his childhood terrors; to haunt the corridors of a castle with a tormented woman; to be seized by the visions of a sinister house; or to be drawn, like that sailor, into the depths of the earth. To immerse oneself in Hoffmann is to enter the night, lulled by images that are as humorous as they are terrifying, brought to life by the drawings of Tristan Bonnemain.

This catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition Une Chambre à Soi (“A Room of One's Own”) presented at Château La Coste in in Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France, in September 2024. This book brings together the works shown in the exhibition. It also includes quotes and interviews with the artists featured, each of whom describes their relationship with the night.

The Lange Nacht der Museen (“Long Night of the Museums”) in Stuttgart took place on the night of Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 6 pm to 1 am. Over 60 of Stuttgart’s museums, galleries, historic buildings, and cultural sites opened their doors late into the night, offering a diverse range of exhibitions, guided tours, live music, performances and interactive programs.

The event’s graphic design was entrusted to Studio Kronschnabl, who used Tifo Venezia, designed by Romain Tronchin and distributed by 205TF, as the title typeface. The secondary typeface used for the text is Agrandir, designed by Alex Slobzheninov and distributed by Pangram Pangram.

1963 US release (PHM-200-108)

Night Lights is the first album by American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger Gerald Joseph Mulligan under the Philips label. This album had been reissued many times across different formats throughout the years.

The artist’s name and the album title are set in caps of Allen Abstract, a seriffed version of Allen Cubist by John S. Allen.

This poster design uses the Watch Outline font (filled in in this case) to pair with the retro Vaporwave design. The neon colors and new age atmosphere of the design evokes the strange psychedelia of vaporwave and cyberpunk designs.

The self-titled debut album of British-based pop band Fox was released on GTO Records in 1975. From Discogs:

After writing and producing for other artists in the sixties, Kenny Young (he penned Under The Boardwalk for The Drifters) put together Fox in the early seventies, recruiting Australian singer Susan Traynor from Wooden Horse (she renamed herself Noosha Fox for this project) and Irish singer Herbie Armstrong to record the band’s first album in 1975, which also featured guest vocals by Queen's Roger Taylor.

The album design by Sue Heaven features lettering integrated with an Art Nouveau-like frame on the front cover. Text on the back cover is set in Arnold Böcklin.

Agusa is a Swedish psychedelic rock band, mostly instrumental, founded in 2013. The music has elements of folk, symphonic rock, progressive rock, and especially when played live the songs often deviate from the studio versions. After five studio albums, the band wrote the music to a movie titled Malmö Noir, directed by Augustin Sjöberg. The soundtrack (most likely with some extra recordings) was released in May 2024 on the album Noir.

The band name and album title use Ganache, with the latter shown in an outline variant. The line below is in Myriad or similar. The back cover also use Ganache for the texts “Side A” and “Side B”. Same goes for the LP labels (not shown here), see images on Discogs. The CD uses it for the plus sign (+) to denote the five CD bonus tracks that did not fit on the vinyl version. The typewriter font used for the track names (and on the vinyl release, also for credits) is John Doe.

The art biennale Anozero’21—22: Meia-Noite was curated by Elfi Turpin and Filipa Oliveira in Coimbra, Portugal. Coline Sunier and Charles Mazé’s visual identity is based on the combination of two symbols, ○ and /, extracted from Anozero’s existing graphic identity to create a continuity with previous editions. In the designers’ hands, ○ becomes a moon ? and its fluctuations ???????? and / becomes the night ////////// and ////////// its ////////// troubles and uncertainties //////////, evoking the biennale’s curatorial project. From abstraction to narrative: from a circle to the moon (or a disco ball?), from shading to twilight.

All communication materials are set in Charles Mazé’s Mercure (Abyme, 2021), Regular, Italic and Transcript. The choice of a serif typeface gives a literary and scientific aspect to the communication – an echo to the Joanina library in Coimbra and its incarnation of western knowledge – and differentiate the design from the past visual identities of Anozero.

On November 4, 2023, the city’s fifth Sofia Game Night festival celebrated gaming in all its diversity. Guests embarked on a new gaming adventure, explored different aspects of games, and had pure fun in the process.

El Origen de la Noche / The Origin of Night is an immersive sound installation by 4Direcciones Audiovisual (directed by Diana Rico and Richard Decaillet) working in collaboration with a group of traditional authorities from indigenous communities of the north-west Amazon, as well as anthropologists, musicians and linguists.

To design the identity of the exhibition, Mia Paltrow-Murray, graphic designer at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, used the typefaces Exposure by Federico Parra-Barrios and distributed by 205TF, Serial B Blur by Mario Julián Gutierrez (Dum Dum Studio) and Neureal by Laura Csocsán (ECAL Typefaces).

Papageno for Peter Pan: the oblique caps with the soft contours are from the only published typeface design by Richard Weber. The Bauer foundry in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, advertised their 1958 release as “eine fröhliche Schrift” (“a cheerful typeface”).

Tale Spinners for Children was the American name for a series of vinyl records with stories and novels adapted for young audiences. Originating in the United Kingdom as Atlas Tales-Spinners, these records were introduced to the U.S. under the United Artists Records label. From the back cover:

Sodium collects photographs by Olivier Metzger from his series of images of the night in Soorts-Hossegor, in the Landes region in France, on the Atlantic Ocean coast. It is the first step in a larger photographic study of French night, started at his residency at Troisième Session in May 2022.

Metzger took his photographs between midnight and 4am, guided by the distinct orange glow of sodium bulbs street lighting. As these are slowly replaced by LED lights, our nights are shifting colours. Metzger’s photographs are a survey of these dark hours, of these remaining ‘fireflies’ in the urban space, and an archeology of light.

Sodium is designed by Alice Jauneau and David Vallance and published by Modds. The titles are set in Persona (Abyme, 2022).

L'aventure en train de nuit (“Night Train Adventure”) is an e-book in pdf format designed by Les Others. Baste B (available at Lift Type) is used for all titles, running headings and page numbers. ABC Diatype and Diatype Semi-Mono (including a yet unreleased Semi-Mono Condensed) by Dinamo as well as LL Catalogue by Lineto are used for text and small information.

Night is the fourth studio album by Norwegian band Gazpacho, released in February 2007 by Intact Records. Shown here is the 2015 reissue on Kscope Records which has a different cover design.

The band logo is, again, in Alien League, with the lowercase A that is without the horizontal bar. The other letters look exactly the same in lower- and uppercase.

A wonderful story of friendship and overcoming fears, translated from Dutch by Laura Watkinson—Carnegie-Medal 2020 short-listed translator of Lampje by Annet Schaap. Featuring stunning illustrations by acclaimed illustrator Karl James Mountford.

The artwork was done in 2019, for the original Dutch version, Het Raadsel van de Zee, published by Billy Bones.

Bird-focused environmental non-profit National Audubon Society celebrates World Migratory Bird Day 2022 with a starry bird graphic designed by Alex Tomlinson that also makes use of his unreleased font Nay Aug. The theme for this year is “Dim the Lights for Birds at Night”, which highlights the impact of light pollution on migratory birds.

Released in 2021 by Brazilian publishing house Arqueiro, Caçadas de Vida e de Morte displays the font Marujo (PintassilgoPrints) on its cover and internal pages titles. The letter t in the word “Morte” (“Death”) was modified to look even more like a cross.
