From the newly launched used book shop New Metaphor Books:

Produced to accompany a 2006 exhibition at the Architectural Association School in London, Manifesto For A Cinematic Architecture presents theorist Pascal Schoning’s dream of an architecture that transforms solid material into the appearance of energy and spatiality. Using light as its main building material, it aims to reach an ethereal state which will become real when energized by the people inside it.

A striking cover of tightly packed Block, but the interior seems not too reader friendly, set in a spindly version of Garamond with ill-advised ornamental ligatures that serve only to distract. The spacing on that anglerfish ‘st’ is especially perplexing.

oGangorra was initially designed as a hub focused on urban transportation and the bicycle. After a lot of talking and research, we figured out a broaden concept together: oGangorra is a place to discuss urban mobility, the access to the city as a whole and everything it can offer to its residents.

The concept of expanded urban mobility made us understand that people's interactions with the city must be free and organic, even if the physical layout of a city is rigid and static. And those interactions change, evolve and bring an urban space to life.

The basis for the visual identity designed by Arnold is a prominent typography, organized within a rational grid which ensures neutrality to the brand, so it may interact with other communication systems - the project's functional necessity. The interventions consist on human interactions which represent mobility and adaptability, priority themes of oGangorra.

Tes — a haphazard, amateur geo-sans — is a very strange selection for a book series championing well-designed editions of overlooked books, but somehow it works. Cover designer Christopher Brian King wisely avoided the lowercase and any other weight but Bold.

This series was a winner in the 2012 50 Books / 50 Covers competition.

For the album artwork to Undercover Folk by Jason Serious, Maurice Redmond created …

hand-made 5cm heads inspired by themes going though the album of cowboys, vagabonds and handsome scoundrels, along with portraits of the band themselves. The heads are disembodied to emphasize the characters and also to be used as effective social media avatars such as Facebook.

For the type, Maurice chose the handdrawn-looking monolinear Strangelove, one of the many recent releases that are reminiscent of Pablo Ferro’s lettering. FaceType’s version is one of the more authentic and successful takes. Strangelove Next comprises three styles – Narrow, Wide and Mix, all of which have been used in the project. The accompanying website is a painful case in point that not every type style can used in any medium at any size.
