Graphic designer Ott Kagovere used an early version of Turist for The Sugar and the Hunger by Robert Linhart, published in an edition of 800 copies by Rab-Rab Press:

The first English language translation of Robert Linhart’s The Sugar and the Hunger, originally published in 1980 is an indispensable factographic inquiry into modern hunger.

Widely acclaimed for his engaged social analyses of proletariat and peasant struggles around the world, Linhart’s inquiry into the sugar regions of North-Eastern Brazil, juxtaposes heterogeneous traits of the impoverished workers’ stories into a vivid cinematic montage.

Translated by John M Floyd and Emilio Sauri, the book includes rare photographs taken by François Manceaux in Northeastern Brazil in 1979.

Turist (WIP) is an interpretation of Venezia, released by Keystone in 1899.

Es stand in der Zeitung (“It was in the newspaper”) is a collection of articles designer Lara Redmer’s father has written on regional history, originally published in the local Nahe-Zeitung newspaper and now self-published as a book. Lara Redmer comments:

When we covered typesetting at Shillington, I was 100% sure a book would be the last thing I’d ever design. But when my dad asked me for formatting help with his Word document during Christmas 2022, I said “you know that I can actually typeset and design this properly?” Well, be careful what you promise.

The chosen typefaces are GT Alpina by Grilli Type and Fabio XM by Giulia Boggio.

Impossible Langhe is a tourist novel, half guide and half story, written by Pietro Giovannini and enriched by photographer Maurizio Beucci. It explores and tells about the Langhe, an area populated by epic stories, visionary heroes and breathtaking landscapes. Impossible Langhe was designed by Elisabetta Azzalini at Undesign and published by Fondazione Radical Design of Charley Vezza, directed by Axel Iberti. The book won Bronze at the European Design Awards:

The volume, conceived as a travel notebook, is designed with the intent to combine the spirit of the Langhe, its historical, cultural and geographical specificities, to the contemporary. The dual nature of the book is explained by the structure of the graphic design that divides each of the nine chapters into two complementary sections: the first one, detailed and analytical, is dedicated to the routes, the second one, narrative and characterized by a colorful background, is reserved for the stories and tales of these places. In the titles the Voyage font exasperates the shapes of the typefaces used for the labels of the wines, creating, with a strong contrast, an elegant but contemporary effect. The palette of typefaces is then enriched with the famous Egyptian character designed by master Aldo Novarese and produced in the late fifties by the renowned Fonderia Nebiolo (a non-random association for a project that tells the story of a land of vineyards and wines), Piedmontese excellence recognized worldwide. The result is a visual and textual journey that leads to the discovery of one of the most characteristic and famous places of Piedmont, from an unusual and special point of view.

Titles are set in Voyage. The text typefaces are Prensa and Suisse Int’l. The contents pages additionally use all-caps Egizio Bold and Triptych Grotesque.

A brochure issued by British Rail’s Rail Freight division that looks at the wide range of freight wagons available along with discussing the manufacturers of them along with the relative merits of leasing and hiring. It also notes that other incentives to using such rail wagons existed including the Industry Act of 1972 and the ‘Assisted Areas’ for which grants and loans existed.

The booklet was produced in conjunction with the West of England Rail Freight Division and produced by the Publicity Department of the Western Region.

Graphic design and layout by Cecilia Gérard for a 288-page book about artistic upheaval in Lyon, France, at the beginning of the 20th century. Made under the direction of Denis Vaginay and to be published by Éditions Libel together with the Brouill’Arts association.

GOOK is a portmanteau of GO skateboarding mag and “book”.

This new experimental format of the magazine focuses on photography, art, creative writing, etc. — all around skateboarding. GOOK is published quarterly and is freely distributed in skateshops all around Spain. The fonts in use are Oroban (Blaze Type) and Increase (Fabio Biesel).

Eric Grossenbacher offers us a finished and richly documented work.

Eastman Kodak, the company which pioneered so much in photography from the 1880s through the 1960s, could have owned digital imaging; the very first electronic camera was born in one of Kodak’s labs. Instead, they missed that boat, going into a tailspin that resulted in their eventual bankruptcy. Tied to that economic engine, the fortunes of Rochester, New York, the archetypal company town where Kodak had its headquarters, fell as “Big Yellow” collapsed.

The brief was to develop the book design and production of Perth’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) centenary book, written by author and journalist, Susan Maushart. The design of this book should break the norms of school history books, be brave bold and modern.

We worked closely with the client, UWA Publishing, and the author to bring this beautifully rich (and at times very amusing) history to life. Although this book has a fairly formal structure in terms of its 11 chapters, every page engages the viewer with different standout images, stories and factoids. The spirit of camaraderie, innovation and achievement are strong elements throughout the book in line with PLC’s 100 year history.

Scope: Book design and production of 416pp quarter bound with tartan marker ribbon. The typeface used throughoiut the book is Laski Slab, designed by Paula Mastrangelo and Ramiro Espinoza and released with ReType in 2014.

In 2014 the Czech News Agency (CTK), organised the exhibition Co odnesl čas … / Faded with time …, a retrospective of Jovan Dezort’s photographs. Jovan Dezort (*1934, Brno) is a Czech journalist, photographer and artist. The exhibition commemorated his sixty years of commitment as a professional photographer. He worked for the Czech News Agency for 15 years, as well as a photo-reporter for other media such as Vlasta magazine. His work has been awarded numerous times nationally and internationally.

The Czech News Agency commissioned the Prague based design studio Ask Designers to create a book with the Dezort photographs. This marked the style and design of the entire exhibition, including promotional posters, banners, tickets, etc. To enhance the contrast and match the richness of the photographic quality the book was printed using a special technique mixing two black inks.

The text was entirely set in Karmina Sans. Markéta Cole, from Ask Designers, explained that Karmina Sans offered the flexibility they needed, “a modern typeface which would work well in the physical space as well in print”, that would perform in printed sizes but also in the exhibition materials. “The light weight looks graceful at small sizes and doesn’t compete too much with the photography. The bold weight on the other hand commands attention and allowed us to create a clean and clear hierarchy on text pages”.
