Quato (Half Ounce) is a short film directed by Montreal filmmaker Alexandre Nachi.

With the film title in mind, the design concept involved consistently using half of every format, making the title stretch and adapt to each format. The title treatment also reflects the character’s experiences throughout the film.

Art direction and graphic design for the rebranding of Mordisco Studio, a multidisciplinary visual creative agency founded in 2018 in Barcelona.

The agency works on a variety of projects, including 3D, animation, illustration, and audiovisual productions. The rebranding is modular, aiming to reflect their ability to adapt and shape each project according to its specific needs.

Are there “feminine” visual forms, fonts and materials? Does the “female” social imprint influence design? The answer to these questions is complex, but it is clear that the choice of typeface has a significant influence.

On their website, the Flint*ype collective makes Flinta* type designers visible, archives them and invites you to engage with questions of marginalization in graphic design. They talked about their project process at the lessoning. Charlotte Rohde also took part in the discussion and talked about her working practice.

The poster for the talk at F+F in Zurich – which in its original form is an installation – ties in with the above-mentioned questions about material and visibility and encourages reflection on patriarchal structures in design.

Remix B in use for Schimelrych bis Chrottehalde – an exhibition in Laufenburg which is a cooperation between the Jurapark Aargau and the Rehmann Museum. It takes place both in the museum and as a tour outside.

Art and landscape are in a reciprocal relationship with each other: in the Rehmann Museum, works are shown that focus on the relationship with nature, while on the tour through the town of Laufenburg and the surrounding forest area, works of art can be discovered that are specifically exposed to the natural conditions at the respective location and interact with them.

The poster for the 2024 edition the Magic Barbès festival titled “United” was designed by French graphic design studio Image Format, based in Paris and Marseille.

Magic Barbès is a collaborative festival created by FGO Barbara and driven by dedicated individuals who work tirelessly throughout the year to offer a wide range of activities and collective experiences to everyone in the Goutte d’Or community, whether they live there, work there, or simply pass through. This event brings together professionals and volunteers to breathe life into the urban fabric of the area. Expect concerts, tournaments, panel discussions, meetings, workshops, and even a cultural olympiad! It's a celebration of joy, harmony, and well-being where everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

Created in 1974, the Sesc Melhores Filmes Festival is the first film festival in the city of São Paulo. It offers the public the opportunity to watch what was most significant on the city’s screens in the previous year. The films shown are chosen democratically through public and critical voting. In 46 years of existence, the Sesc Melhores Filmes Festival has already shown hundreds of Brazilian and foreign feature films. In 2010, the festival innovated by being the first event of its kind to offer its programming with open caption audio description and subtitling services, accessibility features that will be offered in all of the films in this year's grid at CineSesc.

Using the language of projection, blurred images are overprinted, while the warm colors bring references to the Brazilian cinema, highlighting its political importance in 2019.

The festival logo was created by Bloco Gráfico in 2016 and is used for every edition. It’s not clear if it’s custom drawn or based on a font.

The things we do, the stories we tell: Visual identity for Rundgang Armgartstraße 2024, HAW Hamburg, the annual exhibition showcasing student works and projects from the fields of fashion design, textile design, costume design, design theory, and art courses.

A seemingly endless list of words represents all the actions that flow into the creative process of students at Campus Armgartstraße. The visuals stem from a close reading of texts from Meander, Spiral, Explode: Design and Pattern in Narrative by Jane Alison proposing different, non-linear narratives.

The Softimage project focuses on bridging digital and analogue elements within the visual arts, based upon the latest (post-)digital innovations across various media. The show revolves around a group of eighteen students actively engaged in the Softimage seminar at the Weißensee School of Art. Their artistic endeavours primarily revolve around the exploration of both analogue and digital practices. Varying from digital-esque paintings on canvas to prints crafted using machinery and 3D programs and extending to virtual object animations, the project ideas reflect a diverse artistic landscape that underscores the perspectives and possibilities arising from the symbiosis of analogue and digital techniques. The exhibition at Lobe Block serves as an inau­gural opportunity to comprehensively present the research and outcomes of the seminar.

For you type geeks: the words “collective conversation” have been printed from an old set of wood type of from Xilografia Italiana called Treviso in 25 Cicero.

It is also noteable that the size 25 Cicero is very typical for Italy, but not very common in Switzerland or Germany. In Switzerland and Germany, sizes for poster type are 6C, 8C, 10C, 12C, 16C, 20C, 24C… Which makes sense with the duocecimal system of points (fractions of 12). Once a typesetter gets used to it, it is a very practical system since not only the physical body sizes of type, but also the sizes of the physical spacing material and furniture to fill up the non-printing parts of a lock-up will work together nicely in these fractions of 12. Also all sizes come in straight numbers. In Italy however, the system of larger type and furniture is organized differently. Anything larger than 10C is 15C, 20C, 25C, 30C…

Coinciding with their 20th anniversary, Point Éphémère unveiled a new visual identity, created in collaboration with Atelier Choque Le Goff and built around Serial D and Rauschen B.

On Instagram, they write (translated):

Above all, it draws its inspiration from the neighborhood in which the venue is located, somewhere between the water, the fire station and the dust of Jaurès-Stalingrad. It also aims to recapture an alternative spirit that we hold dear, and which is the very essence of Point Éphémère.

Located on the banks of the Canal St-Martin in Paris’s 10th arrondissement, Point Éphémère is an arts center with a bright exhibition space, multi-purpose concert hall and rehearsal rooms. Or, in their own words, “a living space and unofficial provider of cultural content”.

Poster designed by Arp is Arp, using BVH Anto Rounded, as part of the Agora des Nanos scientific event. This event, held at the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris on 25 November 2023, consisted of two participatory meetings focusing on nanoscience, on the theme of “How is scientific discourse transmitted?”.

Specht Studio (Stephanie Specht) created the visual identity for the Royal Academy of Antwerp’s Master 2021 graduation exhibition. A project mainly based on expressive typefaces: Aerobik (from lift-type) and Whyte Inktrap (from Dinamo), paired with Stanley (from Optimo).

Élie Giroud created the visual identity for Les Rencontres de la Bilbliothèque, a series of lectures at the École Duperré Paris.

The system is based on a series of posters created from the same grid. Baste (from lift-type) is the main font of the visual identity, paired with Aperçu (from Colophon) for secondary information. A gradient at the bottom of the page, in a different color for each event, punctuates this series of posters printed in Riso.

ISSUES is a contemporary art gallery in central Stockholm, initially set up as an ambulancing space in 2014 by Oscar Carlson, Johan af Geijerstam, Julia Eriksson and Peter Ström.

Between 2014 and 2021 the gallery produced thirteen shows around Stockholm, where the geographical location was of equal importance as the artist. For Issues #3 in 2015, Ryan Trecartin’s work CENTER JENNY was shown in the local Mediamarkt store on all 196 TV screens simultaneously. For Issues #4 in 2017, a group exhibition took place in an (at the time) empty space on Södermalm shaped like a display window, where the artworks were rotated every fifteen minutes in order to let that specific space come to its fullest.

Because of these new physical and geographical locations, the visual identity for the gallery was changed each time, adopting different typographic references to the current space.

In 2021 a more permanent space on Vattugatan 13 was found, turning the gallery into a commercial one in a fixed location – at least for the time being.

A permanent design system was introduced with the new space, where the location was less important – almost the opposite, as the new space was in a location almost unheard of even for the most hardcore Stockholmer, in an area filled with governmental buildings.

The design system takes its starting points in concrete poetry and early computer art (mainly ASCII) using Vincent Chan’s Quadrant Text Mono, complemented with the addition of a typeface and treatment picked for every artist – giving each artist their own visual identity connected to the space. Each typeface and treatment picked either refers to the artist’s practice or is connected to the idea of a place in downtown Stockholm – or in some cases, both.

The grid is based the word “ISSUES” written 16 by 10.5 times on an A4 sheet — because, you know, too many ISSUES…

The visual identity for ISSUES 4 took its typographic starting points in the typeface Eurostile found at the logo of a left over vacuum cleaner in the space.

The new space at Vattugatan 13 uses Quadrant Text Mono on all its signage and printed matter, as well as on the website and social media.

For most of the shows, merchendise has been made in order to promote the shows with and to the local community and scene that ISSUES is part of. Reflective wests for Henning Hamilton using ABC Maxi Round, gym bottles for Hampus Wernemyr in Jannon, hats for Zoe Barca in Monaako, and candy, T-shirts and mugs in Quadrant Text Mono.

For DOWNTOWN ISSUES 2 in September 2023, one T-shirt with a typographic identity was designed for each participating artist printed in a single copy only. Seen here is a selection of the almost 70 T-shirts in total.

A few examples: The typography for Elis Monteverde Burrau with Tesla references the big amount of Teslas in the neighbourhood (and indicates where this Swedish poet might be heading in the future?). The typography for Georg Nordmark in Amsi references local pet food chain Arket Zoo because of Georg’s interest in animals in his art. The typography for Militza Monteverde Burrau uses Dinamo’s ABC Honeymoon and connects to her organic sculptures in glass. The typography for Ilja Karilampi links to his meme lord status via its use of Impact. Siri Carlén was treated with the never-to-be-released Småländsk Antikva by Konst & Teknik – which started around the same time Siri was a student of Konst & Teknik at Konstfack. Viktor Fordell got a Ford logo knockoff typeface because of... you know... Ford.

The non-personal T-shirts come with one front cover and three different back versions: The big 2 is based on the most downtown building Stockholm offers, parking house Parkaden and its beautiful brutalist numbering system and fascade. “DOWN TOWN” refers to local clothing brand Our Legacy WORK SHOP that is often seen on T-shirts around town. A version of the T-shirt with all the artist names overprinted was made in an extra limited edition of only five copies. All T-shirts printed in white ink on black fabric by Everynight Studios.

Fonts in USE!

Louise Dehaye created a clean and structured visual identity for the 2023/2024 saison of L’Inconnue, a curious and interested music scene. She based the identity on a pair of fonts: Ginka (from lift-type) and Review Mono (from ECAL Typefaces). From Dehaye (translated):

After 35 years under the name Rock & Chanson, Talence’s contemporary music scene is changing its identity to become L’Inconnue. Also, three posters have been specially designed for the season launch party on September 22, and screen-printed by l’Insoleuse.

Visual identity by CM.SUPPLY for Trppn. On their website, the designers describe the project as follows:

Trppn is a mission to shake up the music industry through a new decentralized community platform. Our task was to give their identity and app a fresh boost and create new ways for them to connect with their audience. We didn't want to create rules right away, so we decided to build a fun tool that let anyone to play around with the trppn look and feel. With vibrant colours and trippy visuals inspired by 90s rave scenes, we hope to inspire the creation of a fresh movement with new possibilities.

Wundertal is a dance festival that took place in May 2023 in the German city of Wuppertal, which gives you two hints: the name is a play on words and transforms that town into a “valley of wonders”. Secondly, who does so is Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Wundertal was the first beacon in the theater’s calendar set by newly appointed director-choreographer Boris Charmatz. It involved more than 200 dancers, professional and amateur, and combined dance pieces by him and Pina Bausch.

The promotion material for this event, a series of posters and a program booklet, is the work of Berlin-based agency MOR Design. They were already responsible for the new visual identity of the Tanztheater presented in an earlier post. In some way the designers follow what they conceived of for the theater’s website. The typefaces used are Söhne by Klim for reading text and Origin Super Condensed by Production Type as eye-catcher.

But the specific use of Origin Super Condensed differs between the two projects. While on the website the Slant and the Backslant variants are used to emphasize the diagonal and make the letters dance, here, on the poster, the different instances of the variable font are used to create a defined triangular form. The word is split into three lines of three letters each, going smaller from one line to the next. This way, the letters drag the reader into the poster and towards the dates of the festival.
