Following the release of her seventh studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We in late 2023, American singer and songwriter Mitski published lyric videos for each of the eleven tracks.

Created by Rena Johnson, these videos are all quite consistent, with collages of “intimate and beautiful super 8 footage of Mitski” shot by Mitchell King under direction of Ebru Yıldız, together with additional footage by Johnson.

Following the album art and accompanying communication, designed by Mary Banas, these videos feature a mix of Ready Active and Tofino. The first one, an organic-looking all-caps script, is set centered, in a big size and bright orange color. Given its somewhat ‘inhospitable’, challenging legibility, and the usual purpose of a lyric video, the display typeface is given subtitles, set in all-caps Tofino, in white.

These videos have been created in English, the original language of the songs, but also in Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese, in which cases the lyrics set in Ready Active stay the same and only the ‘subtitle’ part, in white, is adapted. The Japanese version replaces Tofino with what looks like Kozuka Gothic [edit: or rather Hiragino Kaku Gothic, see comments].

Ultra Materiam embarks on a journey to visually represent complex and abstract aspects of human identity, taking the legacy of the NASA Voyager mission as its starting point. The project goes beyond graphic experimentation and encourages reflection on human nature through the comparison of six anthropological theories, leading to a new model based on personality, morality and physiology.

Ultra Materiam is my final degree project made in the BA Design program at Elisava School of Design, Barcelona.

Mitski (full name Mitski Miyawaki, born Mitsuki Laycock) is an American singer and songwriter. The land is inhospitable and so are we is her seventh studio record, released eleven years after her debut album.

The album artwork by Mary Banas showcases Benjamin Dumond and Lucas Descroix's Ready Active. Secondary graphics and merchandise pairs it with Alanna Munro's Tofino in all caps. The design is by Mary Banas.

The District of Tofino, a town on the west coast of Vancouver Island in BC, Canada rebranded in late 2021 with a logo containing a modified version of my typeface Tofino. Tofino is also used as the main brand font and appears across all their media and communications.

The city commissioned additional characters to support the local Indigenous language, Nuu-chah-nulth.

Tofino is used for Taste of Nature. Established in 1989, the privately owned and operated Canadian company develops and manufactures certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher and vegan snack bars, as well as private label products.

Tofino is used in all caps for the logo variants as well as for packaging.

The bilingual info on this box uses another yet unidentified sans. Montserrat or Volte are similar.

The Women of Science Tarot Deck is a card game that helps us tell stories about our future based on principles of science. The cards are designed by Allan Lasser, and illustrated by Matteo Farinella, who writes:

I really hope that a science tarot deck can play this kind of role: a space for people who do not traditionally identify as science geeks to engage with scientific concepts in a playful and nonjudgemental way. And also, a good opportunity to challenge some stereotypes of what science “should” be and what scientists look like by celebrating the inspirational women included in the deck.

The hand lettered card names (“The Strength”, “The Sun”, etc.) are paired with information set in Tofino by Alanna Munro; Source Serif by Frank Grießhammer is used for additional information in the accompanying guide booklet.

The Snow Show Survival Kit was designed by Kevin Spahn for Element Three as a special giveaway for some of their friends at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Denver. Tofino is used in some of its bolder italic styles, together with all-caps marker handwriting.

Paddywax is a brand for candles and fragrances. They partnered with air refreshener brand Pura for a range of air refresheners with nature-inspired fragrances. On the packaging and the cartridges, Tofino (Alanna Munro) is used for information. The Paddywax logo uses Canela (Miguel Reyes, Commercial Type); Pura uses Arista (Francesco Canovaro, Zetafonts).

Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day was born from the Pink Boots Members’ desire to take part in International Women’s Day by raising the profile of women’s role in the beer industry. Head brewer Erin Dale chose to brew a pale ale. The addition of Hibiscus not only gives a subtle berry-fruit flavour with a hint of tartness, it also makes a nice pink hue! The flavour profile is a blend of grapefruit with a subtle hint of strawberry. — Barkerville Brewing Co.

“Hurdy Gurdy Hibiscus” was brewed by a team of women on March 8, 2018, at the occasion of International Women’s Day, and International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day. The design of the label followed a woman-centric approach: designed by a woman (Emily Luce) and using typefaces by women.

Snowflake by Jessica Hische, printed with metallic foil, is paired with two sans serifs: Tofino (Alanna Munro) is used for “Pale Ale” and the light/dark scale on the right hand of the label. All other type is Axia by Kontour / Sybille Hagman.

The Barkerville logo uses Knockout by Hoefler & Co.
