Kerry James Marshall – The Histories is on view at Kunsthaus Zürich from 27 February to 16 August 2026. The exhibition marks the first large-scale survey of Marshall’s work in the German-speaking world, bringing together central works from different phases of his career as well as new paintings.

Marshall’s monumental, multilayered paintings place Black figures at the centre of the image. Since the early 1980s, his work has engaged with the Western tradition of history painting, questioning its omissions, exclusions and inherited hierarchies.

The exhibition graphics were designed by Lena Huber and Chantal Hochuli, using Riant Display and Kit Rounded.

The exhibition is a cooperation with the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. It was realised under the direction of Mark Godfrey in collaboration with the participating institutions, including Cathérine Hug for Kunsthaus Zürich.

The Hotel der Sonnenhof is located in Bad Wörishofen, a spa town in Bavaria, Germany. Known for Sebastian Kneipp's water treatment method, the town attracted guests since the end of the 19th century and became officially a spa town in the 1920s. The Sonnenhof is awarded one of the 101 best hotels in Germany.

Marlide Display is prominently used for display sized type on the website of Jaclyn Carlson, a motherhood and parent coach, educator, and business mentor. Jaclyn Carlson “helps guide through the transformative journey of motherhood. She is a catalyst for change, believing in the power of laughter and meaningful experiences.”

The identity by Studio Wednesday appears to use Feature as the basis for Jaclyn Carlson’s all lowercase logo. In addition, the website uses TWK Lausanne for body text and Brandon Grotesque for navigational elements. The occasional handwritten words are rendered in Aesthetic Monoline.

SGD is the professional association and network of Swiss Graphic Designers. It’s the largest professional association of graphic designers in Switzerland. Founded in 1972, the trade union represents the interests of graphic designers and provides various professional member support. SGD also recommends curricula standards for vocational training to educate qualified visual communication professionals.

Axia, a sans serif uniwidth typeface composed of concise letterforms, is used throughout, together with Rekja.

KSP Productions is a full service production company that partners with brands and creative teams to produce photography and video content.

Their website uses Marlide Display for titles. It’s paired with Dunbar Text. The script used for the signature is Turbinado. The logotype appears to be custom.

Brought together within a European avant-garde network, the "model collection" of the Swiss-German book and type designer Jan Tschichold in the holdings of the Library of Design Basel contains around 1,500 small-format prints. It includes famous designers from the Bauhaus environment such as László Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer, as well as artists such as Kurt Schwitters and El Lissitzky – all pioneers of modern graphic design. This publication documents the complete collection and makes it possible for the first time to study the originals, which make the spirit of optimism of that era tangible and which are usually only depicted in black and white or in heavily altered colors in Tschichold’s books. This broadens the view of a network of 45 designers and a chapter of the European avant-garde that directly influenced the “Swiss Style” of the post-war period.

Mystic Grits, A Southern Girl's Journey to Wisdom is a book written by Darelyn DJ Mitsch and published by Pyramis Press in 2009.

The Upright Italic and Ornaments styles of Odile are used throughout the book, and paired with the then freshly released Mrs Eaves XL Serif.

Odile is a text typeface, with bracketed top serifs and unbracketed bottom serifs in lowercase, a quality that counters the rigidness that most traditional slab serif typefaces possess. The design draws inspiration from an experimental typeface named Charter, originally designed by the American book and type designer William Addison Dwiggins.

Dwiggins contemplated Charter as the italic companion to Arcadia, Experimental No. 221. The Charter project progressed slowly, was put on pause during World War II and came to a halt in 1955. The typeface family remained incomplete and was never commercially released. Odile Upright Italic reveals visible similarities shared by Dwiggins’ Charter and defines the design approach for the family.

Marlide Display in use together with Mori for the Milan Music Week 2023. The annual event was established in 2017 by the city of Milan, Assomusica, FIMI, Nuovo Imaie, and SIAE to dedicate an entire week to music and its market. The logo appears to be based on Gotham.

Over the years Milan Music Week has become a priority event for the entire Italian music scene and is eagerly awaited by the citizens of the city and the country.

Planblue is building a global seafloor database with underwater satellites. Planblue is a spin-off company from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI-MM) in Bremen, Germany. With the support from the EXIST Start-up program and the accelerator Climate-KIC, Planblue was founded in 2017.

Park & Ride is an Austrian fusion / jazz funk band consisting of Pepi Abicht (trumpet+flugelhorn); Luis Abicht (trumpet+flugelhorn); Simone Beer (accordion), Silvio Sinzinger (guitar); Thomas Hierzberger (bass); Alex Klomfar (percussion); Paul Schneider (drums); and Otto Trapp (didgeridoo + muschelhorn). Their album Medaki was released in 2013 on Various Art Records.

Innate offers ketamine therapy to treat adults and teens suffering from a variety of health conditions. Their identity (designer unknown) pairs two subfamilies of Kontour’s Utile collection.

Utile is an elegant and subtly flared sans serif, suited for continuous smaller sized text typography with superb legibility and optical balance in print and screen. Utile Display, the contrasted sans companion, promotes a timeless elegance and lively aesthetic that comes especially to light in larger sizes.

These data visualization posters focus on the growing global issue of electronic waste. Using maps, charts, graphs and other visual elements, each poster individually provides a smaller narrative while working together to tell the collective story of e-waste and why it is such an issue. The first poster tackles the definition of e-waste, how much is being generated and by whom. The second poster zooms in, providing a glance how individuals contribute to e-waste and some of the impact this has on the environment.

The posters were made as a student project at the University of Houston. Axia by Kontour is used in several weights.

Café des Amis is a restaurant in the Wipkingen neighborhood of Zürich. The brand and identity is designed by Nora Alex Gerber.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary, the Bern Railway Workers' Cooperative (EBG Bern) staged an open-air play in the summer of 2019. Written by Livia Anne Richard and loosely based on the novel Jesebel by Irène Némirovsky, the play Tüüfelskreis (“vicious circle”) brought the turbulent early days of the Weissensteingut in Bern, a settlement of railway-workers, back to life. The campaign for the theater performance was designed by Scarton Stingelin, Bern, Switzerland.

This notebook-sized catalog, published on the occasion of the exhibition La SIP, du microscope à la machine-outil held at the Musée d’histoire des sciences in 2006, sets out to illustrate the astonishing industrial epic of the Société Genevoise d'instruments de physique (SIP), from its creation in 1862 until the 1950s through a number of emblematic objects of the exhibition.

Designer Mathieu Christe chose Jigsaw Stencil (designed by Johanna Biľak) for headlines, and paired it with body text set in Odile by Sibylle Hagmann. See a previous post by Kontour for an extensive description of Odile’s history and design traits.

The organization SGD, Swiss Graphic Designers (professional association of Swiss graphic designers) launched a campaign under the motto "Be a style guide" and accompanying hashtag #lifeasagraphicdesigner during the Interaction Design Lab in Bern, 2021. The intended audience are design studios and agencies that offer in-house apprentice programs. The campaign was designed by Scarton Stingelin and contains various media outlets such as a website, social media posts, flyers, and posters.

The Phillips Collection was founded by art collector and philanthropist Duncan Phillips in 1921. The Phillips Collection has been collecting modern and contemporary art for one hundred years. Duncan Phillips’s former home – and additions to it – in Washington’s historic Dupont Circle neighborhood provides a unique setting for the growing collection of over 5,000 works. Following Phillips’s unconventional approach to exhibitions, The Phillips Collection galleries are frequently rearranged to facilitate new conversations between artworks and fresh experiences for visitors.

The Collection website was designed under direction of Vivian Djen – Head of Editorial and Design at The Phillips Collection. The typography primary uses Elido, a humanist sans serif type family with a wide range of variations for editorial use. The tag line of the logo is set in Odile (Elido in reverse) – the serif companion of Elido. The design concept for the sans/serif superfamily draws inspiration from an experimental typeface named Charter, originally designed by the American book and type designer William Addison Dwiggins.

The main typography on Sarah Hartley’s portfolio website is loosely spaced. It uses Utile Display (Kontour) as the main typeface, paired with even more generously spaced lines set in Karla (Jonny Pinhorn). The script typeface used for the H in logo and monogram is yet to be identified.
