Founded in 1875 by Jean Noé Carl Jakob Ludwig (previously with Flinsch) in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1883 Ludwig Mayer joined as a partner and the company was renamed to Ludwig & Mayer. In the mid-20th century, a cooperation with Simoncini, the Italian manufacturer of matrices for typesetting machines, allowed the foundry to offer their typeface designs to be used on Linotype machines, too. In 1985, production was discontinued and some of the popular typefaces were sold to Neufville. [Reichardt]
Associated type designers of note include Jakob Erbar, Walter Höhnisch, Karlgeorg Hoefer, and Helmut Matheis.
