Ubani, an independent Tbilisi cityscape research centre, published a guidebook in English and Georgian addressing the architecture and history of Tbilisi’s Kala district (კალა). The guidebook is produced by an interdisciplinary team, it brings together the work of David Brodsky, Ana Chorgolashvili, and Nata Tatunashvili, with concept development by Brodsky and editorial direction by Chorgolashvili. Contributions include text by Nino Bughadze, graphics by Aleksandre Gaphrindashvili, Oleg Glebov, and Georgiy Gnilorybov. The publication was designed by Daria Yarzhambek and Yury Ostromentsky, with the lettering created as part of Tsartserebi, a project rethinking the historical Georgian typography.

Body text in both English and Georgian versions is set in Loos by CSTM Fonts, while the lettering on the guide’s cover is inspired by a partially faded inscription on a 1877 tombstone located in the Anchiskhati Basilica of St. Mary.

The Ubani Tbilisi Cityscape Research Center is an independent institution focused on exploring the urban landscape of Tbilisi. Through a variety of activities such as publishing books, running interdisciplinary workshops, hosting lectures, discussions, and exhibitions, Ubani seeks to engage a diverse audience including architecture students, professionals, historians, artists, and city officials. One of the center’s key projects involves creating detailed digital maps and 3D models of Tbilisi buildings, offering valuable insights into the city’s architectural fabric and urban form.

Loos by CSTM Fonts is in charge of typography in Ubani’s identity and on its website.

One day, walking together around Tbilisi, collector Giorgi Japaridze and gallery owner Tamuna Gvaberidze bought a loaf of shotis puri, a type of traditional Georgian bread that is baked on almost every street corner. While enjoying their crusty snack, they decided to photograph all the bakers of Georgia. The two teamed up with photographer Alexander Zachs and travelled to the Samegrelo region. Having talked to a number of local bakers, Giorgi and Tamuna realised that their quest should result in a bilingual book rather than just a photo series and asked author Maria Korolkova to join the project.

The book was designed by Daria Yarzhambek and Yury Ostromentsky. They picked Loos by CSTM Fonts (co-designed by Daria and Yury with Ilya Ruderman) for Georgian text and opted for Parmigiano by Typotheque to set English.

Biography experience. The Innocent (in Russian: Опыт биографии. Невиновные) is a book that consists of two documental novels written by a father – Felix Svetov – and a daughter – Zoya Svetova. Both parts of the book tell stories of innocently convicted people from the early Soviet Union and modern Russia.

The cover, designed by Yuri Ostromensky and Daria Yarzhambek, is set in two optical sizes of Maregraphe, a sharp and tight modern serif typeface inspired by the text on the wall of a Marseille tide gauge of the late 19th century and the French lettering of different times.

The book was published by Ivan Limbakh Publishing House.

Philipp Dzyadko has been writing Martyn Radio [Радио Мартын] for ten years — collecting the old letters from private archives and flea markets and introducing them to the world of the future where there’s just one news source allowed. The e-book version of the novel was made available in March, and the printed book edited by Elena Shubina was published in December. Ara Oms is a typeface distributed under an unconventional licensing model: you can get it if you donate to volunteer charities helping Ukrainian refugees in Georgia. Ara Oms supports most Latin-based European languages, basic Cyrillic, and the Georgian script. The family was recently expanded with a geometric mono grotesque Ara Oms Sans Mono.

Dadi wine bar works with small Georgian wineries and regularly expands its wine list. The new Kinzmarauli labels feature narrow Loos by CSTM Fonts for English and Georgian, the display typeface Ara Oms (designed by anonymous authors to support Ukrainian refugees in Georgian), and an illustration by Daria Rychkova.

Loos  is a closed-aperture sans serif with a vast number of styles ranging from Compressed to Extended and from Thin to Black. The idea behind the typeface grew out of Daria Yarzhambek and Yury Ostromentsky’s design of the book Why a Man Should be Well-Dressed: Appearances Can be Revealing by Adolf Loos. The two also designed the Dadi Wines label.

For two years, Полторы комнаты (Poltory komnaty, “A Room and a Half”) where Joseph Brodsky spent 17 years of his life, has been a museum that speaks Loos, designed by CSTM Fonts. It is paired with SangBleu Republic by Swiss Typefaces – its Cyrillic character set was designed by CSTM Fonts.

In October last year, dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov decided to donate to A Room and a Half the 17 signed books that Brodsky had been giving him on various occasions for years. In order to transform separate signatures into a clear story of 20-year friendship, curators of the exhibition accompanied the books with photos and excerpts from memoirs. As it is the case with design of the rest of A Room and a Half (their logo, booklet, webpage), graphic language of the exhibition is based upon SangBleu Republic by Swiss Typefaces and Loos by CSTM Fonts.
